Welding

Abstract

Welding is a fabrication technology of broad scope whereby fusion of materials is achieved through application of heat and/or pressure. Fabricated metals and nonmetals products include bridges, buildings, ships, automobiles, offshore platforms, pipelines, pressure vessels, consumer appliances, and miniature welds used in microcircuits. This article provides an overview of metal and plastic welding. Three specific metal welding processes are discussed: arc welding, resistance welding, and ultrasonic welding. The section on plastic welding covers the most commonly used processes.
