Mit 7 Textabbildungen.Far S~uglinge und Kleinkinder, besonders wenn sic rachitisch sind, ist der Keuehhusten eine gef~,hrliche Krankheit. In manchcn Landern der Erde verursaeht die Pertussis mehr Todesf~lle als Diphtherie, Seharlach und Mascrn zusammen. Daher ist es verstandhch, wenn immer wieder Anstrengungen gemacht werden, um hier eine Wendung zum Besseren zu erzielen. Nach dem erwiesenermal~en vollkommenen Versagen aller sedativen und hypnotischen Mittel, was die Heilung des Keuehhustens angeht, wandte man sich in den letzten Jahren mit besonderem Interesse der Vaccinetherapie zu. In einer groBen A~lzahl von Mitteilungen wird der Heilwert der Vaccine gclobt, es fehlt jedoeh nicht an skeptischen Stimmen. Die verschiedenen Meinungen k6nnen dadureh bedingt sein, dab versehiedene, ungleich immunisierende Vaccinepr~parate verwendet wnrden: wissen wir doch, dab Bordet-Gengou-(B.G.) Bacillen durch Kulturmedium und Alterung ~nderungen ihrer antigenen Eigenschaiten erleiden. Es mul3 einen naehdenklich stimmen, wenn ein so erfahrener Autor wie Sauer z, der seine B.G.-~St/~mme auf Menschenblutplatten ziichtet, nachdriicklich betont, die Keuchhustenvaccine sei ebenso wie die Typhusvuccine ein Immunisierungsmittcl jedoch kcin Heilmittel.Wenn man in therapeutischer Absieht vaeciniert, so setzt man voraus, dab der betreffende Kranke in der Lage ist, aktiv eine Immunits zu erwerben. Nun hat aber ein groBer Teil der Kranken, der wegcn Keuchhusten in eine Klinik eingewiesen wird, das crste Lebcnsjahr noch nicht iiberSchrittcn, d.h. diese Kinder befinden sich in einem Alter, in dem n~ch ailgemeiner Ansicht eine Immunk6rperbildung, wenn iiberhaupt, nur mange]haft start hat.Das Fehlen eines' absoluten MaBes far die Immunit/it zwingt dazu, sich mit Teilph~nomenen dieser Eigenschaft lebender Wescn zu befassen. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt spielen jene Eigenschaften des Serums eine Rolle, die in vitro dadurch erkennbar werden, dal3 die Erreger selbst oder einzeine Bestandteile derselben mit einem Immunserum reagieren. In kurzer Zeit hatten wir mehr Ms 30 verschiedene St~mme gesammelt, die in 2--3 w6chentlichen Passagen weitergefiihrt wurden. Aus diesen suchten wir einen solchen heraus, der in 0,9%iger Kochsalz]6sung eine m6glichst stabile Aufschwemmung lieferte. Wir erinnern uns, da~ die sog. ,, Spontanagglutinabilit/~t" die Ausfiihrung der A.1% mit B.G.-Bacillen erschweren sell. Unter Agglutination verstehen wir die Zusammenballung von Bakterien :zu feinen F16ckchen.
