Weissella diestrammenae sp. nov., isolated from the gut of a camel cricket (Diestrammena coreana)

Abstract: A novel, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic, rod-or coccoid-shaped bacterium, designated strain ORY33T , was isolated from the gut of a camel cricket (Diestrammena coreana). The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain ORY33 T belonged to the genus Weissella, with highest sequence similarity to Weissella koreensis S-5623 T (97.7 %). The strain grew optimally at 30 6C and pH 7 in the presence of 0 % (w/v) NaCl.Catalase and oxidase activities were negative. The genomic DNA G+C con… Show more

“…A few species (Weissella ceti, Weissella diestrammenae and Weissella cibaria) have been isolated from human or animal sources (Björkroth et al, 2002;Vela et al, 2011;Oh et al, 2013), while Weissella soli was isolated from soil samples (Magnusson et al, 2002). In the present study a novel species of the genus Weissella, which is associated with wine grape berries is described.…”

“…Cells are coccoid- or rod-shaped and growth occurs from 4 to 37°C, in 0–4% (w/v) NaCl and at pH 5-8 (Oh et al, 2013 ). Bacteria are heterofermentative and produce gas from glucose, they are able to hydrolyse arginine and produce gas from glucose.…”

“…The genus Weissella was established in 1993 and to date, 19 names have been attributed to 18 species ( W. cibaria is considered a synonym of W. kimchii ) [ 3 ]. The majority of Weissella strains have been isolated from vegetables, fermentative substrates, meat, meat products, and the gastrointestinal tracts of some animal species, insects, and humans [ 4 6 ]. Several species, including W. confusa and W. cibaria , have been associated with rare cases of bacteremia in humans and animals [ 7 10 ].…”
