Weighted random frequency hopping in the presence of narrowband interference

Abstract: Frequency hopping spread spectrum is an effective technique used to mitigate the effects of narrowband interference. Traditional random frequency hopping (RFH), which can be categorized as a channel ignorant scheme, gives worse performance than channel-aware schemes such as matched frequency hopping, clipped matched frequency hopping and advanced frequency hopping, in frequency selective fading channels. However, these channel-aware schemes are more easily disrupted by adaptive jammers. In this paper, a modifi… Show more

“…Hopping techniques determine not only the subset of channels, but also the way these channels are scheduled. Frequency hopping techniques can be classified as either channel-ignorant or channel-aware [ 24 ]. With channel-ignorant frequency hopping techniques, the hopping pattern is selected regardless of the channel characteristics, whereas with channel-aware frequency hopping techniques, the hopping pattern is selected after determining the channel characteristics.…”

“…We consider two possible cases of radar operating modes (for pulsed radars): pseudo-random pulse-to-pulse frequency agility, which is an efficient way to reduce probability of mutual interference (see [10], [11], [12]), and fixed carrier frequency mode (frequency cannot be agile from pulse to pulse, and can be changed by operator (control system) ones in several tens milliseconds).…”

“…According to (9) optimization of frequency resources is a task of finding optimal frequency matrix F opt which minimizes (10). The brute-force search of optimal configuration of F can be unacceptable in case of large number of radars and frequency channels due to an exponential complexity.…”

“…Frequency-hopping (FH) communication can reach a fairly wide bandwidth and possess the performance of anti-interference, but when the intensity of interference signals far exceeds the anti-interference ability of FH communication system itself, the receiver will fail to receive data precisely. Therefore, scientists have proposed the interference suppression method to further enhance the anti-interference ability of frequency-hopping system [1][2][3].Fast frequency-hopping (FFH) communication has a strong ability of anti-interference, but when the system requirement is very high, it will be hard for single frequency-hopping communication system to reach the performance requirements. From the view of anti-interference, the larger number of frequency hopping, the interference smaller; but unduly large number of frequency hopping will make the system structure relatively complex.…”
