This paper proposes a linear recursive Bayesian filter for minimum variance unbiased joint input and state estimation of structural systems. Unlike the augmented Kalman filter (AKF), the proposed filter falls within the category of Bayesian filters in which unknown inputs are estimated without attributing any fictitious input model or statistics. Also, in contrast with the existing algorithms in the latter category, such as the Gillijns and De Moor Filters (GDFs), the developed filter applies to systems with and without direct feedthrough, in particular, systems with a rank-deficient feedforward matrix. Because of the latter features, the filter is referred to as universal filter (UF) for convenience. The numerical examples show that the UF performs better than the AKF. Due to its structure, the UF does not require the tuning of the hyperparameters for inputs, and therefore the problematic instability of the AKF is not encountered in the case of a large modeling error variance of the input. For systems with direct feedthrough, the error and covariance propagation terms differ due to the distinct state space.Consequently, the UF can enhance estimations due to the well-conditionedness of the relevant inversion problem. Moreover, the UF can deal with systems with rank-deficient feedforward matrix where these systems are not covered by GDFs.

The surface of concrete pavement is susceptible to cracking. The propagation of a crack in a concrete structure may take the form of a one-dimensional line crack, a two-dimensional surface crack, or a three-dimensional volume crack. Predicting crack propagation in a concrete pavement surface is a complicated task. The whole process of formation, propagation, and orientation of cracks can be considered a stochastic process that necessitates a probabilistic investigation approach. In the present study, crack propagation in concrete pavements is studied from a probabilistic point of view using the concepts of multinomial Markov Chains using Random Walks. The study is based on actual probabilities of propagation and orientation of cracks obtained by tracing crack paths from a large dataset of images using custom-built software. Two random walker models are developed using the trinomial and multinomial Markov Chains. The master equation is developed assuming the trinomial Markov Chain, which has been brought for further theoretical and numerical developments. Examples of inferences and numerical simulations are presented to showcase the potential uses and applications of the proposed probabilistic approach for the design and scheduling of inspection visits and maintenance/rehabilitation strategies of concrete pavements and surfaces.

This paper proposes a crack detection method for rail joint screw holes based on the ultrasonic nonlinearity. Experimental and numerical studies are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed approach. The ultrasonic signals excited and received at the rail head are processed by spectral analysis and Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD). The third harmonic can be clearly observed from the spectrum analysis, which is supposed to be the nonlinearity of structures. Further, WPD is used to decompose the frequency components of the received signals. A damage index (DI) is defined based on the energy percentage of the energy in the WPD node containing the third harmonic with respect to the total energy of the received signal. It is found that the DI relating to the third harmonic increases with an approximately linear relationship when the crack grows bigger. It can provide a basis for the crack detection and quantification for the rail joint screw holes. A finite element model of the experimentally tested rail is also developed and numerical studies are conducted to verify the ultrasonic nonlinearity in the rail structure. Numerical results have the same trend with the experimental results, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method for crack detection in rail joints based on the high order ultrasonic nonlinear harmonics.
