Weight-gain patterns from prepregnancy until delivery among women in Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract: Many women in rural Central Java, Indonesia, enter pregnancy with suboptimal nutritional status. For most of these women, total weight gain during pregnancy is insufficient. It is likely that this contributes to adverse health outcomes for both the mothers and their newborns.

“…During the fieldwork, all women reporting a dietary intake below 4200 kJ were revisited and interviewed about reasons for the low intake. Many women reported nausea during the first trimester and weight gains during that period only corresponded to 0:08^0:26 kg per week 25 . Because pregnant women have an increased dietary intake and a somewhat increased BMR, likely leading overall to a slightly higher EI/BMR, the cut-off points used should perhaps have been adjusted upwards in the first and second trimesters (see above).…”

“…Pre-pregnant weight for a sub-sample of 275 women was 47:7^8:0 kg and pre-pregnant BMI was 21:2^3:1 kg m 22 : At 2 months of pregnancy, BMI of 471 women with complete data was 22:0^4:0 kg m 22 : Weight gain during pregnancy has been presented elsewhere (see above) 25 . Over 90% lived in the rural areas and 44% had seven years of schooling or more.…”

“…In a study in West Java, Indonesia, researchers failed to find any effect of parity on pregnancy weight gain (Achadi et al, 1995). The same was true for both age and parity in a study conducted from prepregnancy until postpartum in Central Java, Indonesia (Winkvist et al, 2002). In sum, weight retention after pregnancy is affected by maternal growth during pregnancy (more weight gain), low initial BMI (more weight gain in women in affluent societies; mixed effect in women in less affluent societies), smoking (less weight gain), as well as exercise, illness and low dietary intake (less weight gain).…”

“…Data pertama diperoleh dari data berat badan ibu pada umur kehamilan ≤6 bulan dan data kedua dari pemeriksaan berat badan ibu pada umur kehamilan >6 bulan. Perhitungan estimasi telah banyak digunakan dalam berbagai penelitian, seperti pada penelitian di Lombok(17) dan Jawa Tengah (18). Perhitungan IMT pra hamil diperoleh dari berat badan pra hamil (kg) dibagi tinggi badan (m 2 ).…”
