Due to increased demand, labor costs, and water scarcity, farmers look for an alternative way of rice cultivation under prevailing conventional transplanting. Direct‐seeded Oryza sativa and system of rice intensification (SRI) have been developed as superior substitutes to transplanting. However, if weeds are not controlled properly, the direct seeding method faces serious weed infestation and yield losses. In this context, a field study was undertaken during kharif growing seasons to evaluate the growth and yield of O. sativa under various crop establishment methods and weed management practices. The results revealed that system of rice intensification (SRI) method of crop establishment significantly produced taller plants, higher dry matter accumulation, a greater number of tillers per meter square, highest leaf area index, yield attributes, namely, panicle density, panicle length, and grains per panicle, and higher grain and straw yield over direct seeded rice (DSR) and transplanted O. sativa. Among the various weed management practices, penoxsulam produced significantly higher grain and straw yield. The results demonstrated that average grain yield increase with SRI was reported to be 24.11% and 23.62% over DSR and 10.47% and 12.23% over transplanted O. sativa. Among various establishment techniques, lower weed density and dry weed biomass were achieved by transplanting O. sativa. Penoxsulam herbicides significantly reduced the weed density and dry weed biomass but penoxsulam herbicide demonstrated significantly the maximum reduction in number of weeds per meter square and dry weed biomass and proved superior against complex weed flora.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2022 at Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Brahmavara, Udupi, Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga, on sandy loam soil to study the effect of different method of rice establishment and weed management options on yield and economics of paddy. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with broadcasting and drum seeder method of establishment and five treatment combinations, replicated thrice. The study revealed that, the weed free treatment maintained by hand weeding recorded highest growth parameters and rice grain yield. The sequential application of pre-emergence herbicide pendimethalin 38.7 % CS @ 750 g a.i. ha-1 at 0-3 DAS (fb) early post-emergence application of bispyribac sodium 10 % SC @ 25 g a.i ha-1 at 13-15 DAS, recorded lowest total weed density (36.92, 31.73 and 40.45 No. m-2) at 15, 30 and 45 DAS, respectively and lower weed index (7.23%) under drum seeder method of establishment . The yield and yield attributing parameters like number of tillers (291.33 m-2), panicle length (19 cm), filled grains (89.33 panicle-1), grain yield (4221 kg ha-1) and straw yield (5387 kg ha-1) were observed in sequential application of pre-emergence herbicide pendimethalin 38.7 % CS @ 750 g a.i. ha-1 at 0-3 DAS (fb) early post-emergence application of bispyribac sodium 10 % SC @ 25 g a.i ha-1 at 13-15 DAS under the drum seeder method of establishment. The highest net return (₹ 82586 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.81) was also recorded in the same treatment.

Weed management is an integral part of direct seeded rice technology owing to a very high weed infestation. Thus, in order to control the diverse weed flora using the most appropriate herbicide and devise the most effective date of sowing in the DSR, a two-year field experiment was conducted during the kharif season of 2019 and 2020 at Zonal Agricultural Research station Powarkheda, Narmadapuram, JNKVV Jabalpur. The field experiment was laid out in split plot design with three main plot treatments and five sub plot treatments and replicated thrice. The results revealed that late sowing of DSR on 20 th July and post emergence application of bispyribac sodium 25 g/ha had lesser weed density; weed dry weight and higher weed control efficiency (56.42% and 66.19 %) among all other treatments. However, plant growth characters, yield attributes and grain yield were higher with the early sowing of DSR on 20 th June and early post emergence application of bispyribac sodium 25g/ha. The early sowing on 20 th June along with the application of bispyribac sodium 25g/ha resulted in highest net monetary returns (83901 Rs/ha) which also increased the B:C ratio (3.1). Thus, it was concluded that the early sowing of direct seeded rice along with early post emergence application of bispyribac sodium can control the weeds and increase the grain yield and can prove to be a promising technology adopted by the farmers.
