“…Few herbicides like trifluralin, pendimethalin and imazethapyr in field peas (Hanson and Thill 2001 ; Miller 2003 ); pendimethalin (Dixit et al 2005 ) and oxyfluorfen (Ahuja and Sandhu 2003 ; Sikkema et al 2007 ) in cabbage; pendimethalin, oxadiazon (Mehmood et al 2007 ; Adekpe et al 2007 ) and oxyfluorfen (Qasem 1996 ) in garlic can be applied effectively. Ndarubu et al ( 2000 ) evaluated the intercropping systems in Nigeria and showed that sugarcane could be intercropped with either soybean or sesame based on considerations for yield and value of the crops, while pre-emergence application of diuron (2.0 kg a.i./ha) + post-emergence application of dimethametryn (3.0 kg a.i./ha) at 12 WAP or an early hoe-weeding at 4 WAP + post-emergence application of dimethametryn (3.0 kg a.i./ha) were found safe and could be as an efficient alternative to manualhoeing in such systems. Kaur et al ( 2015 ) in north west India studied the effect of pre-emergence application of oxyfluorfen 0.234 kg/ha and pendimethalin 0.75 kg/ha and recorded similar level of weed control to hand-weeding, besides increased yields of cabbage, peas and garlic than the weedy check.…”

“…Cane-soybean intercropping systems were examined in several works. Ndarubu et al (2000) Showed that, Sole sugarcane attained the highest cane yield of 34.7 ton ha -1 whereas; intercropping cane with soybean and sesame remarkably reduce cane yield which recorded approximately 24.3 ton ha -1 . They concluded that, intercropping sugarcane with fast growing and short duration crops like soybean has advantage of suppressing weeds.…”

“…The scheme will enhance quick and widespread cane cultivation with minimal constraints, and will also increase the resource base and diversification of cropping systems. Technologies relating to sugar cane farming systems are currently being developed at the National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI) in respect of weed management, nutrition, protection and intercropping systems (Gana and Busari, 1999;Ndarubu et al, 2000;Ndarubu and Kolo, 2002). Multiplication of the cottage mills in cane-growing communities will also create market outlets for the produce and facilitate the integration of the crop-livestock sector by utilizing sugar by-products such as bagasse and molasses as livestock feeds.…”
