Science is more and more data-driven. This means, that a significant part of a scientist's work is dedicated to accessing, visualizing, integrating and analyzing data from a possibly wide range of heterogeneous sources. In this paper we propose SciQL, a query language that supports scientists in this task and allows them to focus on their main purpose, i.e., on doing research. SciQL sits between scientists or data processing tools on the one hand and different data sources on the other hand in order to decouple users from technical aspects of accessing data. It allows users to express their data management, refinement, transformation, processing procedures and visualizations in SciQL regardless of the syntax and capabilities of the underlying physical data source sources. This way scientists and client tools deal with only one language to interact with different data sources, e.g., text files, spreadsheets, relational DBMSs, or MapReduce systems. To achieve this, SciQL provides various constructs among them Schema Definition, (e.g., schema design and Data transformation), Data Retrieval (connecting to various data sources and formats, filtering, joining, grouping), Data Manipulation (e.g. Updating, deleting, versioning and provenance) and Visualization commands and data structures can be named.In this paper, we will discuss the general idea why we believe SciQL is needed, and explain the goals and the steps we intend to take in order to achieve these aims.

To develop Web applications, various integrated development environments have been used. In addition, several frameworks for efficiently developing those applications have been proposed. This paper presents the image-oriented pagetransition framework that models a Web application as a set of transitions of Web pages, and using visual components, makes it easier to write processes executed when a Web page transfers to another Web page. This page-transition framework has the following novel features: (1) The developers of Web applications do not need to write any processes for receiving and analyzing submitted form data. (2) The data submitted by page transfers are stored in the appropriate variables that are automatically generated. Using these automatically generated variables, the developers can write necessary actions for each Web page from which control transfers. (3) The developers can deal with tables used inside the programs as visual components, and can use these components to design dynamic Web pages.

AbstractÐSince the Web encourages hypertext and hypermedia document authoring (e.g., HTML or XML), Web authors tend to create documents that are composed of multiple pages connected with hyperlinks. A Web document may be authored in multiple ways, such as, 1) all information in one physical page, or 2) a main page and the related information in separate linked pages. Existing Web search engines, however, return only physical pages containing keywords. In this paper, we introduce the concept of information unit, which can be viewed as a logical Web document consisting of multiple physical pages as one atomic retrieval unit. We present an algorithm to efficiently retrieve information units. Our algorithm can perform progressive query processing. These functionalities are essential for information retrieval on the Web and large XML databases. We also present experimental results on synthetic graphs and real Web data.
