Fuzzy context-specific intention inference for robotic caregiving

To provide timely and appropriate assistance, robots must have the capability of proactively understanding a user's personal needs, the so-called human intention inference. In human-human interaction, humans have a natural and implicit way to infer others' intentions by selecting correlated context features and interpreting these features based on their life experience. However, robots do not have this capability and it is not realistic to build an explicit formula to associate human intentions with context. In this article, a novel fuzzy context-specific intention inference method is developed for human-like implicit human intention inference. With a fuzzy manner, context features are converted into discrete context statuses, which are similar to human subjective feelings. An intention-centered common sense database is developed consisting of correlated fuzzy context statuses, object affordances, and their relationship with human intentions. With this database, a Fuzzy Naïve Bayesian Network algorithm is adopted for implicit intention inference. Home scenario results validated the fuzzy context-specific intention inference methods reliability and lab scenario results validated the fuzzy context-specific intention inference methods effectiveness and robustness. This work is expected to develop intuitive and effective human-robot interaction, consequently enhancing the adoption of assistive technologies and improving the independence of the disabled and elderly in activities of daily living.

Abstract. Robotics has played an increasingly important role in several sectors of the society. Nowadays, robots are not only used to support activities in factories, but also to assist house cleaning, border surveillance, and even surgeries. The variety of application domains and the rising complexity are challenging the design of robotic systems that control such robots. In this perspective, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has been adopted as a promising architectural style to design large, complex robotic systems in a flexible and reusable manner. Several Service-Oriented Robotic Systems (SORS) have been developed in the recent years and a large number of services are available for reuse. Nevertheless, none of the environments dedicated to the development of SORS provide an efficient mechanism for publishing and discovering services. As a consequence, services for SORS have to be manually searched, reducing significantly the potential of reuse and productivity provided by SOA. This paper presents RoboSeT, a mechanism that supports cataloging and discovery of services for robotic systems. RoboSeT is based on semantic search and classifies the services using a taxonomy of the robotics domain. Results of our case study indicate that RoboSeT facilitates the development of robotic systems, since it presents the potential to widely promote reusability of services for SORS.

Cloud networked robotics

This paper proposes a new field of research called Cloud Networked Robotics, which tackles the issues for supporting daily activity, especially for the elderly and the disabled, throughout various locations in a continuously and seamless manner by abstracting robotic devices and providing a means for utilizing them as a cloud of robots. With recent advances in robotic development environments and in integrated multi-robot systems, robots are acquiring richer functionalities and robotic systems are becoming much easier to develop. However, such stand-alone robotic services are not enough for continuously and seamlessly supporting daily activity. We examine the requirements in typical daily supporting services through example scenarios that target senior citizens and the disabled. Based on these requirements, we discuss the key research issues in cloud network robotics. As a case study, a field experiment in a shopping mall shows how our proposed prototype infrastructure of cloud networked robotics enables multi-location robotic services for life support.
