Web Development of Spatial Content Management System through the Use of Free and Open-Source Technologies. Case Study in Rural Areas

Abstract: The rapid development of the technology of the web systems and GIS, in conjunction with the world economic crisis, formed the content for the promotion and development of free systems and open-source technologies. At the same time, the tendency toward the standardization of data, metadata and services, with the aim of creating common "Language" for the reading and the dissemination of information available, is a basic research area in the global scientific community in this field. The development of WebGIS sys… Show more

“…In the words of Fu and Sun (2012), "The web has unlocked the power of GIS -it has put GIS in the homes of millions and in the hands of billions and made it usable across all industries, from government and business to education and research". Web GIS applications are characterized by standardization of data, metadata and services and cross-platform capabilities where the exchange and analysis of geographical information is easy, direct, economical and efficient (Pispidikis and Dimopoulou, 2015). It represents a significant milestone in the development of GIS by changing the way geospatial information is acquired, transmitted, published, shared and visualized (Fu and Sun, 2012).…”

“…video, audio, and text) [28] combined with spatial data to form web GIS. Video files, audio and spatial data were combined with internet technology to form multimedia web GIS application that provided powerful tools to solve spatial query solutions online [29] [30]. However, these systems lacked trip planning capabilities useful for trip personalization.…”

“…Web GIS is the process of designing, implementing, generating and delivering maps on the World Wide Web by combining both the advantage of GIS and the internet [1]. GIS integrates and relates data with spatial component and supports users to view in proper format which supports in making complex spatial decisions through visualization, interactive modelling and analysis environments [13].…”
