Web Content Search and Adaptation for IDTV: One Step Forward in the Mediamorphosis Process toward Personal-TV

Abstract: We are on the threshold of a mediamorphosis that will revolutionize the way we interact with our TV sets. The combination between interactive digital TV (IDTV) and the Web fosters the development of new interactive multimedia services enjoyable even through a TV screen and a remote control. Yet, several design constraints complicate the deployment of this new pattern of services. Prominent unresolved issues involve macro-problems such as collecting information on the Web based on users' preferences and appropr… Show more

“…This is done to broaden horizons while reconfiguring and reinventing in new forms to compete with the dynamism of new media (Barrios-Rubio, 2021). Something similar can be seen when mediamorphosis revolutionizes the way audiences interact with their television devices, which then encourages the development of technology that combines interactive digital TV (IDTV) and the web, which gives rise to new interactive multimedia services, which are increasingly personalized according to user preferences (Ferretti et al, 2007 ).…”

“…In (Cho and Park, 2005) the authors design an integrated web browser for digital home networking and digital data broadcasting based on ACAP standard instead of DVB standard. In (Ferretti et al, 2007), the authors introduce a system to access the WWW that requires the usage of a server-side application gateway, acting as a web-spider, to collect a predefined set of web contents and reformatting them to fit the constraints of the TV environment. This approach is useful in the production and management of the so called "walled garden services", where the broadcaster or service operator is able to control and validate the contents to be accessed by the user but can become extremely cumbersome in the access to the open Internet.…”

“…The infrastructure should manage and integrate various technologies in a transparent way, permitting the access, the production, and the integration of information coming from a multitude of media (e.g., computer/Internet, domestic television, mobile), and making them available in several contexts. To this aim, transcoding tools are crucial to transform contents developed for a specific media typology into a format compatible with other media (e.g., think of contents developed for high resolution PC's screens that must be visualized on lower resolution screens such as television or mobile devices) [10].…”
