Web-Based Virtual Research Environments (VRE): Support Collaboration in e-Science

Abstract: Interdisciplinary challenges in research today require increasingly cooperation among researchers. The demand for building up Virtual Research Environments (VRE) becomes more and more urgent than ever before. Built on top of web, VRE systems aim at supporting research activities with much more efficient methods for sharing data and knowledge bases. In this paper, we present our recent work on development of a general-purpose VRE system by extending Sakai, an advanced collaboration and learning platform, with t… Show more

“…Current literature discusses various technologies used for the development of VREs. Most of the VREs that have been developed to date have taken existing applications of a similar nature, such as Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), to use as its foundation (for example see: Adler et al, 2004;Yang and Allan, 2006;Yang and Allan, 2007;Singh, 2008). Consequently, the development of VREs has been technology driven, rather than demand driven.…”

“…As with many other VREs (for example see: Adler et al, 2004;Yang and Allan, 2006;Yang and Allan, 2007;Singh, 2008) VEBER was based on an open source distributed toolset, known as Moodle (www.moodle.org). Moodle was originally developed as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).…”

“…Lots of countries are paying more and more attention to domain knowledge service platform, and some large, national level research projects and practical activities have been carried up. There are some systems or software tools that we can refer to, such as VIVO based on ontology [3,4], VRE based on SOA [5,6], Harvard Catalyst, Sciologer of Columbia University [7], SKE of CAS [8], the open source software of virtual learning environment SaKai, [9][10][11], etc. These construction experiences provide a good foundation for this study.…”
