In the construction industry, it is a common practice to conduct a design review to uncover potential problems by comparing the designer's plan to the client's specifications before the construction begins. The design review involves cognitive process where conversation and debate help to cultivate effective decision-making. It also includes thinking and processing information to empower human communication. The designer's mental processes are crucial as they determine how designers address challenges and construct appropriate decisions. Hence, this study aims to investigate the cognitive criteria that can improve visualisation in the design review practice. This research conducted video interviews with a group of experts in the construction industry to elicit their feedback regarding the topic of virtual collaboration for quality assurance during the design review phase. The authors analysed the collected data using thematic analysis to develop cognitive criteria that improve decision-making during design review. The results uncover the possibilities of more future studies in this area. In conclusion, cognitive criteria with the aid of Virtual Reality (VR) have emerged as a potential solution for enhancing visualisation during the design review process.

This paper proposed the mixed-mode methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of the cognitive process when using Multi-user Virtual Reality (VR) in the design review sessions. The research explains that the design review is an essential part of the planning process. It evaluates the client’s requirements against the designers’ design before the construction starts. Quality communication among the designers and clients plays a central role in enhancing the output of the design review session, apart from the quality in visualisation during the presentation. A multi-user VR system with a head-mounted display allows users to fully immerse into the virtual environment (VE) during the design review process and subsequently achieve quality discussion and decision-making. This paper describes the process of data collection in quantitative and qualitative methods, where questionnaires will be distributed to determine the state-of-the-art of the designers’ cognitive processes when they are involved in the design review session. Parallelly, an experiment on the use of multi-user VR during a design review session will be conducted. Users (Designers) will be interviewed before and after the experiment. Finally, multi-user VR’s effectiveness will be identified by comparing the findings from both quantitative and qualitative methods.

A smart water quality monitoring system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm was designed to protect water resources from pollution in real-time. Long-range (LoRa) application of the low-power, wide-area networking (LPWAN) concept has become a phenomenon in IoT smart monitoring applications. This study proposes the implementation of a LoRa network in a water quality monitoring system-based IoT approach. The LoRa nodes were embedded with measuring sensors pH, turbidity, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), and dissolved oxygen (DO), in the designated water station. It operates at a transmission power of 14 dB and a bandwidth of 125 kHz. The network properties were tested with two different antenna gains of 2.1 dBi and 3 dBi with three different spread factors (SF) of 7, 9, and 12. The water stations were located at Sungai Pantai and Sungai Anak Air Batu, both rivers on the Universiti Malaya campus. Following a dashboard display and K-means analysis of the water quality data received by the LoRa gateway, it was determined that both rivers are Class II B rivers. The results from the evaluation of LoRa performance on the Received Strength Signal Indicator (RSSI), Signal Noise Ratio (SNR), loss packet, and path loss at best were -83 dBm, 7 dB, &lt; 0%, and 64.41 dB, respectively, with a minimum received sensitivity of -129.1 dBm. LoRa has demonstrated its efficiency in an urban environment for smart river monitoring purposes.
