Introduction: Although continuing education is necessary for practicing nurses, it is very difficult to organize traditional classes because of large numbers of nurses and working shifts. Considering the increasing development of mobile electronic learning, we carried out a study to compare effects of the traditional face to face method with mobile learning delivered as text messages by cell phone. Materials and Methods: Sixty female nurses working in our hospital were randomly divided into class and short message service (SMS) groups. Lessons concerning breast cancer screening were prepared as 54 messages and sent in 17 days for the SMS group, while the class group participated in a class held by a university lecturer of breast and cancer surgery. Pre-and post-tests were undertaken for both groups at the same time; a retention test also was performed one month later. For statistical analysis, the paired T test and the independent sample T test were used with SPSS software version 16; p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Mean age and mean work experience of participants in class and SMS groups was 35.8±7.2, 9.8±6.7, 35.4±7.3, and 11.5±8.5, respectively. There was a significant increase in mean score post-tests (compared with pre-tests) in both groups (p<0.05). Although a better improvement in scores of retention tests was demonstrated in the SMS group, the mean subtraction value of the post-and pretests as well as retention-and pre-tests showed no significant difference between the 2 groups (p=0.3 and p =0.2, respectively). Conclusions: Our study shows that teaching via SMS may probably replace traditional face to face teaching for continuing education in working nurses. Larger studies are suggested to confirm this.

BackgroundThe e-learning method, an internet-based learning through a computer is also described by multiple other terms: web-based learning, online/distance learning and computer-assisted training are just a few of them. This method uses information and communication technologies to teach people that may live in remote locations 1 as a new innovative methodology. 2In the context of innovative education of the twenty-first century, the e-learning is establishing itself as an effective technological tool in the continuing education for health professionals with potential access to information regardless of time and physical space to update content studies.According to the UK National Health Service, the e-learning in nursing has been used in continuing education of nurses, technicians and nursing auxiliaries searching for professional update, improvements and development of good clinical practices supported by scientific evidence. The method is considerate an essential and effective component for the continuing education of practioners. 3A study conducted at the St. Catherine University, USA, on the effectiveness and interactivity of distance learning in nursing, revealed that e-learning is an effective way to meet the needs of different students as well as an important component of a new style in promoting education through information technology to improve teaching and learning in and out of classrooms making students active subjects of their own learning helping them to practice nursing in new forms.

-The smartphone has become a popular accessory in the pocket of many nursing students nowadays. They are widely accepted new devices much cheaper and more universal than PDAs. The use of smartphone applications would be the good supplement for nursing education. The smartphone provides a quick access to educational materials and guidelines during clinical, class and panel discussion. With downloadable applications, subscriptions, and reference materials, they can be used to engage students and reinforce learning anytime and anywhere. New nurses can review references online instructional videos prior to performing skills in their clinical practice. Furthermore, the rapid change of preferred treatments, drug dosages, postsurgical care, and preventive healthcare regimens requires knowledge update and lifelong learning for both nursing students and experienced nurses. This article will introduce the issues surrounding the use of smartphones in nursing education first, then discuss the related technologies in the design and development of smartphone applications.

Abstract: Web-based education has encouraging effects in improving both participants' knowledge and skills performance, and in enhancing self-efficacy in performing nursing skills, with a high satisfaction rate expressed by participants. More rigorous experimental studies are advocated.
