Weatherscapes

Abstract: Due to the complex interplay of various meteorological phenomena, simulating weather is a challenging and open research problem. In this contribution, we propose a novel physics-based model that enables simulating weather at interactive rates. By considering atmosphere and pedosphere we can define the hydrologic cycle - and consequently weather - in unprecedented detail. Specifically, our model captures different warm and cold clouds, such as mammatus, hole-punch, multi-layer, and cumulonimbus clouds as well a… Show more

“…[DZC*13] use a particle system to simulate the rain and snow effect in real‐time, together with large textures that help reduce the particle number. Herrera et al [HHP*21] propose a unified physics‐based framework to simulate weather at interactive rates (Fig. 12a).…”

“…While significant effort within computer graphics has been devoted to the simulation of clouds [WCGG18, HMP*20, VGL*20, HHP*21], smoke [FSJ01, WXCT19] and lava flow [SAC*99, NKL*07, ZKL*17], there has to date been relatively little focus on volcanic plumes. While plumes share some characteristics with related phenomena, such as the convective velocity of cumulonimbus clouds, they are unique in regard to the extremes of temperature and vertical scale.…”

“…However, path tracing of atmospheres is a lengthy process, and moreover, the models do not directly support the rendering of clouds and overcast skies. For that, one would render fully volumetric clouds from a simulation [HMP*20, HHP*21] with expensive volumetric path tracing, or use machine learning [KMM*17] for improved efficiency.…”
