“…Consistent with other studies (Deschênes & Greenstone, 2011;Nsabimana & Mensah, 2020;Ogasawara & Yumitori, 2019), our identification strategy is based on the unpredictability and plausibly randomness of weather shocks. However, there are several potential concerns related to this identification strategy, namely selective migration, selective mortality/fetal loss due to cold shocks (Aguero, 2014;Deschênes & Greenstone, 2011), and fertility selection.…”

“…Other potential channels discussed in the literature include shocks to agricultural productivity. Similarly, extreme cold weather conditions can negatively affect agricultural productivity, affect the availability and cost of nutritional foods, and limit family resources/income (Freudenreich et al., 2022; Freudenreich et al., 2022; Nsabimana & Mensah, 2020; Ogasawara & Yumitori, 2019). In this paper, we test some of the potential mechanisms through which cold weather affects children's growth.…”

“…Further, the literature has also documented the direct association between child nutrition and agricultural farm input use and the weather patterns especially in developing countries where both rural and urban household livelihood depends enormously on agriculture [ 46 , 47 ]. The highest level of stunting in Nyarugenge district despite the lowest level of poverty could also be explained by possible inequalities in wealth distribution as already discussed above on annual household income.…”
