Planar antennas have become an integral component in modern biomedical instruments owing to their compact structure, cost effectiveness, and light weight. These antennas are crucial in realizing medical systems such as body area networks, remote health monitoring, and microwave imaging systems. Antennas intended for the above applications should be conformal and fabricated using lightweight materials that are suitable for wear on the human body. Wearable antennas are intended to be placed on the human body to examine its health conditions. Hence, the performance of the antenna, such as its radiation characteristics across the operating frequency bands, should not be affected by human body proximity. This is achieved by selecting appropriate conformal materials whose characteristics remain stable under all environmental conditions. This paper aims to highlight the effects of human body proximity on wearable antenna performance. Additionally, this paper reviews the various types of flexible antennas proposed for biomedical applications. It describes the challenges in designing wearable antennas, the selection of a flexible material that is suitable for fabricating wearable antennas, and the relevant methods of fabrication. This paper also highlights the future directions in this rapidly growing field. Flexible antennas are the keystone for implementing next-generation wireless communication devices for health monitoring and health safety applications.

In an ultra-wideband (UWB) system, the two-dimensional (2D) multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms based on high-precision 2D spectral peak search can jointly estimate the time of arrival (TOA) and angle of arrival (AOA). However, the computational complexity of 2D-MUSIC is very high, and the corresponding data model is only based on the dual antennas. To solve these problems, a low-complexity algorithm for joint AOA and TOA estimation of the multipath ultra-wideband signal is proposed. Firstly, the dual antenna sensing data model is extended to the antenna array case. Then, based on the array-sensing data model, the proposed algorithm transforms the 2D spectral peak search of 2D-MUSIC into a secondary optimization problem to extract the estimation of AOA via only 1D search. Finally, the acquired AOA estimations are brought back, and the TOA estimations are also obtained through a 1D search. Moreover, in the case of an unknown transmitted signal waveform, the proposed method can still distinguish the main path signal based on the time difference of arrival of different paths, which shows wider applications. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the Root-MUSIC algorithm and the estimation of signal parameters using the rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm, and keeps the same estimation accuracy but with greatly reduced computational complexity compared to the 2D-MUSIC algorithm.

Comprehensive evaluations, including various focal lengths and bending scenarios, underscored the superior performance of this adaptable lens over prior techniques. Its exceptional precision and sensitivity render it an ideal tool for real-time remote health monitoring systems, particularly in pulse detection. The research findings consistently aligned the heart rates detected by this innovative method with standard reference rates, reaffirming its reliability and accuracy. This consistency highlights the potential of the transmitarray lenses as a valuable advancement in medical radar systems. The study not only validates the effectiveness and reliability of the lenses but also lays a solid foundation for further research and development in this field. The insights garnered are expected to significantly bolster the progression of radar technologies in healthcare, leading to more accurate, efficient, and non-invasive health monitoring solutions, thereby enhancing patient care and outcomes.
