Wearable Sensors for Measuring Movement in Short Sessions of Mindfulness Sitting Meditation: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Mindfulness techniques are useful tools in health and well-being. To improve and facilitate formal training, beginners need to know if they are in a stable sitting posture and if they can hold it. Previous monitoring studies did not consider stability during sitting meditation or were specific for longer traditional practices. “…The wearable health monitoring system is a typical application of wearable computing in the field of medicine. Wearable sensor-based monitoring of external vital signs in clinical settings ensures better support for assessing a patient's health status and can send automatic alerts to care providers in the event of health deterioration [ 6 , 7 ]. Argent et al evaluated a sample sensor-based biofeedback system and explored the feasibility, availability, perceived impact, and user experience of using the platform.…”

“…Feeding gestures were detected to prevent obesity (Zhang, Stogin et al, 2018). Movement in mindfulness meditation was detected to facilitate training (Rodriguez et al, 2018). Environmental information such as indoor or outdoor settings (Doherty et al, 2013), and exposure to food marketing (Barr et al, 2015), were collected to better design health behavior interventions.…”
