Wearable Pulse Oximeter for Swimming Pool Safety

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to develop an algorithm for a wearable device that would prevent people from drowning in swimming pools. The device should detect pre-drowning symptoms and alert the rescue staff. The proposed detection method is based on analyzing real-time data collected from a set of sensors, including a pulse oximeter. The pulse oximetry technique is used for measuring the heart rate and oxygen saturation in the subject’s blood. It is an optical method; subsequently, the measurements obtain… Show more

“…Furthermore, a few have presented their study about the impact of toxic elements in soil [ [37] , [38] , [39] ]. The paper's authors [ 40 , 41 ] proposed sensor-based devices to detect harmful chemicals in fruits and vegetables. They applied the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NVDI), Molecularity Imprinted Electrochemical Sensors, and the hyperspectral imaging technique.…”

“…In the event that any irregularity is detected in any of the health parameters, the ESP32 immediately activates an alert message through the global systems for mobile/ general packet radio service (GSM/GPRS) device to a close relative or a doctor. In addition, the bracelet will have an alert button that, when pressed, will directly send an alert message to the mobile phone of the family, doctor or caregiver through the SIM7006SA-H regardless of the measurement parameters [25]. This general equipment description can be seen in Figure 2.…”

“…One of the most relevant advantages of wearable PPG systems is that thanks to their absolute non-invasiveness, they can be used during sports activities to monitor physical effort and prevent life-threatening situations. Although further testing is needed, an algorithm for the real-time processing of pulse oximeter and accelerometer data and recognition of pre-drowning symptoms in swimming pools was proposed in [ 17 ].…”
