Wearable and IoT Technologies Application for Physical Rehabilitation

Abstract: This research consists in the development an IoT Physical Rehabilitation solution based on wearable devices, combining a set of smart gloves and smart headband for use in natural interactions with a set of VR therapeutic serious games developed on the Unity 3D gaming platform. The system permits to perform training sessions for hands and fingers motor rehabilitation. Data acquisition is performed by Arduino Nano Microcontroller computation platform with ADC connected to the analog measurement channels material… Show more

“…Limitations were also mentioned with respect to the hardware development category, including the need for enhanced calibration or upgraded components for better monitoring of accurate data. One study reported the need to improve a control strategy [ 139 ], while others mentioned general hardware issues [ 61 , 109 , 134 , 156 , 166 ]. In addition, some studies referred to the need for adjustments regarding the range of motion of the users [ 49 , 160 ] or the size of the hand [ 5 ].…”

“…Thus, the scenario varied depending on the part of the upper extremity that was targeted. Nevertheless, it is evident that in the case of attempts that belong to hardware development, the purpose is focused on more specific (fine) movements (ie, accuracy of the movement achieved in object placement), with noticeable interest in the force that the user exerts [13,47,[54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61]. Moreover, another class of game type is the time (ie, completion time of the tasks).…”

“…The IMU device consists of a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope [14][15]. For the microcontroller used, the Arduino Nano can be used as was done by Ricardo Alexander et al In his research, Ricardo Alexander used Arduino Nano to make a motion tracking glove that can read the angular velocity value from the IMU sensor and convert it to a rotation value and send the rotation value to a VR device using Bluetooth communication [16] [17].…”
