Wearable Accelerometer and sEMG-Based Upper Limb BSN for Tele-Rehabilitation

Abstract: Assessment of human locomotion using wearable sensors is an efficient way of getting useful information about human health status, and determining human locomotion abnormalities. Wearable sensors do not only provide the opportunity to assess the behavior of patients as it happens in their daily life activities, but also provide quantitative, meaningful feedback data of patients to their therapists. This can pinpoint the cause of problems and help in maximizing their recovery rates. The popularity of using wear… Show more

“…Preprocessing is used to enhance noisy signals and remove artifacts. Sources of noise and artifacts may include power-line interference, electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), electrooculogram (EOG), and individuals’ movements [ 14 , 50 ]. In this study, the preprocessing phase is divided into four steps.…”

“…There are several architectures for DL. Among them is the convolutional neural network (CNN), which is the most used architecture for medical problems, especially dealing with medical images [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. A CNN contains a huge number of layers; thus, it is denoted deep networks.…”

“…Moreover, choosing the appropriate feature extraction approach that has a strong capacity to extract significant features from such complicated patterns and textures ( Xie et al, 2019 ). Feature extraction is the main step in the accurate diagnosis of medical conditions ( Baraka et al, 2019 ) such as BC ( Ragab, Sharkas & Attallah, 2019 ), gastrointestinal diseases ( Khan et al, 2020 ; Ali et al, 2019 ; Khan et al, 2019 ; Attallah & Sharkas, 2021 ), heart diseases ( Attallah et al, 2017a ; Attallah & Ma, 2014 ; Karthikesalingam et al, 2015 ; Attallah & Ma, 2015 ), and brain disorders ( Attallah, 2020 ; Ceschin et al, 2018 ; Attallah, Sharkas & Gadelkarim, 2019 ; Attallah, Gadelkarim & Sharkas, 2018 ). Accordingly, CADx systems are characterized into two categories.…”
