Wear Mechanisms in Galling: Cold Work Tool Materials Sliding Against High-strength Carbon Steel Sheets

Abstract: Transfer and accumulation of adhered sheet material, generally referred to as galling, is the major cause for tool failure in sheet metal forming. In this study, the galling resistances of several tool steels were evaluated against dual-phase high-strength carbon steel using a SOFS tribometer, in which disc-shaped tools were slid against a real sheet surface in dry sliding test conditions. Three different frictional regimes were identified and characterized during sliding, and any transition in friction corres… Show more

“…A new slider type of test system has been developed to study the performance of several alternative die materials sliding against the advanced HSS [7] and to evaluate the performance of several kinds of coatings and lubricants [8]. Twist compression test (TCT) [9], ball-on-disk test [10], SOFS tribometer (disc-shaped tools sliding against a teal sheet surface) test [11] and deep drawing test [12], ironing test [13], a tensile strip test [14] have been used to investigate the galling in forming the HSS. However, all of the experiments mentioned above are performed at the room temperature.…”

“…The galling phenomenon is sensitive to many factors such as microstructure and properties of the contacting surfaces, roughness, temperature, the chemical composition in the interface between surfaces, etc. [6,7,15,27,28]. In the present work, it was found to be of high importance to eliminate factors that affect the transfer of material between contacting surfaces such as lubrication and roughness.…”

“…Carbon-based coatings or nitrogen alloying of powder metallurgy tool steels have shown promising results to solve such trouble. Adhesion wear was reduced in these studies when such materials slid against different carbon steels (10,11) .…”
