A multi technique study of a new lithium disilicate glass-ceramic spray-coated on ZrO 2 2 2 substrate for dental restoration https://doi.org/10.1515/bglass-2017-0004 Received May 05, 2017 revised Jul 07, 2017; accepted Aug 09, 2017 Abstract: An alkali niobate-silicate veneer ceramic for ZrO 2 -based dental restoration was developed and characterized for its physical properties and structure. The properties were adjusted for dental applications. The new lithium disilicate glass-ceramic VBK (sold as cerafusion or LiSi) can easily be applied by spray coating to any individually formed ZrO 2 -matrix and needs only one final tempering treatment. The surface of the glass-ceramic is very smooth. The color of the already translucent glass-ceramic can be adjusted to that of individual natural teeth. The structure of the glass-ceramic was studied by XRD and Raman spectroscopy as a function of heat-treatment and of spatial variations within the material and at its interfaces. ToF SIMS, SEM and thermal analysis techniques were applied to investigate the crystallization behavior and surface-interface reactions. XRD and Raman spectroscopy identified different crystalline phases in the amorphous glass matrix including Li 2 Si 2 O 5 , Li 2 SiO 3 , NaxLi (1−x) NbO 3 and Na 3 NbO 4 . The Raman spectrum of the amorphous matrix is dominated by the vibrational activity of the highly polarizable niobate units with a prominent feature at 865 cm −1 , assigned to Nb-O stretching in NbO 6 octahedra, which have non-bridging oxygen atoms and are connected to the silicate matrix rather than to other niobate polyhedra.

Relative Translucency of a Multilayered Ultratranslucent Zirconia Material

Aim:The aim of this study was to compare the translucency parameter (TP) of ultratranslucent multilayered (UTML) zirconia according to thickness and layer level. Materials and methods:Rectangles of UTML zirconia with four layers [dentin layer (DEL), first transitional layer (FTL), second transitional layer (STL), and enamel layer (ENL)] and four different thicknesses (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mm) were milled from blanks. Digital images were taken in a dark studio against white and black backgrounds under simulated daylight illumination and international commission on illumination (CIE) Lab* color values recorded using Photoshop Creative Cloud software. The TP was computed and compared according to thickness and layer level using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Bonferroni post hoc analysis for multiple comparisons. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results:In each thickness, TP values were similar between any two layers. The significant effect of thickness on the TP was observed only in the first two layers. In the DEL, translucency was significantly greater at 0.4 mm than all other thicknesses. In the FTL, differences were significant between 0.4 and 0.8 mm and between 0.4 and 1 mm. Conclusion:The investigated zirconia does not seem to show gradational changes in relative translucency from dentin to enamel levels regardless of the thickness used. Thickness affected the TP only in the first two layers with better translucency at 0.4 mm.Clinical significance: Since relative translucency does not seem to be significantly different between layers, clinicians can modify the apicocoronal positioning of the UTML layers within the restoration according to the desired Chroma without any implications on the clinically perceived translucency. While the thickness of 0.4 mm may be suggested for anterior esthetic veneers because of its higher translucency, the other thicknesses of 0.6 to 1 mm can be used to mask colored abutments in full contour restorations.

The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the wear behavior of the abrader when tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), cp-titanium (CpTi) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy (TiAlV) were used for the antagonist on fixed dental prostheses. Both hemisphere abrader specimen and flat substrate specimens were prepared using TZP, CpTi and TiAlV. Two-body wear tests were performed in distilled water, and wear volume of the abrader specimen was measured to evaluate the wear behavior. In addition, a scanning microscopic observation and an electron probe micro-analysis were performed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the wear. The wear volume of CpTi and TiAlV abrader specimen showed approximately twenty times larger than that of TZP abrader specimen against all substrate specimens. This is due to the differences in hardness between the ultra-hardness of TZP and comparatively low hardness of CpTi and TiAlV. The wear volume of CpTi and TiAlV abrader specimen against TZP substrate was significantly smaller than CpTi and TiAlV substrates despite the hardness of TZP was much larger than those of CpTi and TiAlV. This phenomenon may be based on the adhesive wear mechanism. Elements of Ti, Al and V originating in the TiAlV substrate were detected adhering to the abrader CpTi specimen. These results suggest that fixed dental prostheses of CpTi and TiAlV are susceptible to wear against not only TZP but also CpTi and TiAlV in contrast to TZP fixed dental prostheses.
