Limited work on the wear properties of martensitic stainless-steel weld clads initiated this work which included investigations on microstructural and wear properties of cladded AISI 410 (filler wire)/EN 8 plates (substrate). Three layers of martensitic stainless steel (AISI 410) were deposited using metal inert gas (MIG) welding on medium carbon steel (EN 8) achieving a 51.5 ± 2.35 HRC of top layer. The elemental and phase fractions of the cladded layers indicated 98% martensite phase and retained austenite (2%). About 40% dilution was observed between EN 8 and the first weld layer. The results of tests carried out on pin on disc tribometer revealed an enhancement of anti-wear life of the martensitic weld cladded EN 8 by three times that of uncladded EN 8. The uncladded EN 8 plate suffered severe damage and high wear, leading to its failure at 478 s. The failure of the uncladded EN 8 sample was identified by the occurrence of high vibration of the pin on disc tribometer which ultimately stopped the tribometer. On the other hand, the cladded EN 8 sample continued running for 3600 s, exhibiting normal wear. After the tribo test, the surfaces of the pins of both cladded and uncladded EN 8 were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D profilometer. The surface characterization of tribo pairs indicated ploughing and galling to be the primary wear mechanisms. The average grain size of top and middle layer was in the range of 2–3.5 µm, while the base metal showed 5.02 µm mean grain size, resulting in higher hardness of clad layers than base metal, also favoring better wear resistance of the cladded EN 8 samples as compared to uncladded EN 8 samples.

The current becomes a factor influencing the hardness value In the welding. The higher the welding current would affect the higher the hardness test results. If the current were used is low it will make it difficult to ignite the electric arc. Aims of this study to determine the effect of welding current (90, 110 and 130 A) and buffer layer on hardness, macro and microstructure layers are result from hardfacing using AWS A5.13 EFe2/AWS A.51 E7018 elektrodes. The hardfacing process uses a Shielded Arc Metal Welding (SMAW) welding machine with DC+ polarity. Hardfacing consists of three layers, 1st layer uses AWS A5.13 EFe2 electrode, 2nd layer uses AWS A.51 E7018 electrode, and 3rd layer uses AWS A5.13 EFe2 electrode. The increase in hardness will occur significantly after hardfacing on the base metal. The higher welding current is resulting the higher hardness value. The hardness of the 130 A specimen is higher than 90 A and 110 A specimen. In the 130 A specimen the hardness value was 468.1 VHN, and in the 90 A specimen the hardness value was 358.94 VHN.

Owing to the global shortage of raw materials and an increase in their prices, there is a growing demand for engineering solutions to increase the lifespan and durability of equipment and components. Therefore, this study aims to combine surface engineering and welding engineering to produce a niobium-rich coating using submerged arc welding (SAW) deposition. SAW is a cost-effective technique that allows high deposition rates and technical simplicity, which can enhance mechanical properties and resistance to abrasive wear of components. This research involves the addition of a FeNbC powder alloy in percentages of 5, 10, and 15 wt.% to a neutral commercial SAW flux, as an alternative to adding Nb to the microstructure of the deposited coating. The coating was characterized by optical microscopy to analyze the microstructure, such as the presence of phases; microhardness through a Vickers micro-durometer, and resistance to abrasive wear through the loss of mass using a rubber wheel-type abrasometer. The wear mechanisms were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a Nb-rich coating can be deposited via SAW, and the coatings successfully increased microhardness by up to 110% and resistance to abrasive wear to values higher than the base metal used (microalloyed steel). The microstructure formed was rich in Fe2Nb and NbC, proving the formation of Nb-rich phases. Additionally, the mechanism of abrasive wear was predominantly plastic for the base metal and changed to micro-cutting and micro-plowing after the addition of up to 15% of FeNbC.
