Objectives: This research was carried out to determine the traditional methods used by mothers to wean infants from breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: Descriptive type of planned study was conducted on mothers who referred to the pediatric polyclinic of a training and research hospital in the province of Ordu between 25 July and 25 August 2017. The universe of research mothers with children between 2-5 years of age (n=362) who applied to the pediatric outpatient clinic, the sample consisted of the mothers who met the research criteria (n=271). "Questionnaire Form" was used as data collection tool. Before starting the study, written permission from Ordu province Public Hospitals Union and verbal consent from mothers who participated in the study were taken. The data were assessed by using descriptive statistics, chi-square test and t-test. Results: It was found that the average time it took the mothers in the study to wean their infants was 15.96±9.34 month, 25.1% had difficulties while weaning their infants and 25.5% used traditional methods. Of the mothers who used traditional methods, it was found that 48% put tomato paste on their nipples, 28.4% put pepper, 25.4% gave nutritional supplement with feeding bottle, 20.7% gave pacifier, 14% sent the infant to

Background: The breastfeeding process is as vital for the mother as it is for the baby. Therefore, weaning is a difficult decision for both parties. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the traditional and non-traditional methods that mothers use to wean their babies. Methods: This descriptive type of study was conducted between May 15, 2018, and October 15, 2018, on 1124 women with healthy children aged 2-5 years who were referring to the Primary Health Care Center in Kocaeli Province in Turkey. The data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. Results: Around 31.8% of mothers (n=358) applied a substance to their nipples, which is said to create a frightening effect for the baby. About 14.5% of mothers (n=164) applied substances on the nipple, to leave a bitter taste in the mouth of the baby, and reduce the desire to suck the nipple. Another method used to wean is to apply something that creates a repulsive effect on the nipple. This method was used by 12.3% of mothers (n=139). The percentage of women who failed on the first attempt was 11.38% (n=128). The reasons for re-starting breastfeeding were as follows: the method to wean was not working (21.1%, n=27), the influence of relatives to abandon weaning (6.2%; n=8), and the baby crying too much (89.1%; n=11). Conclusions: Some mothers used the traditional method for weaning and the majority of the babies of the mothers who used the traditional method responded by crying. According to these findings, training and counseling on breastfeeding are recommended to mothers who are breastfeeding by nurses.

Closing the Gap in Maternal and Child Health: A Qualitative Study Examining Health Needs of Migrant Mothers in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia

We conducted a qualitative study that explored the views and perceptions of migrant women in, Dandenong, Victoria, Australia about sociocultural barriers and health needs during pregnancy and in the postnatal period. The study was informed by the Social Identity Theory and the Acculturation Theory. It involved five focus group discussions with 35 migrant mothers from Afghanistan, Africa, China, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Jordan. Five themes emerged from the analysis: (1) the need for family support and complex social environments; (2) dealing with two cultural identities; (3) the health of mother and offspring; (4) access to the health system; and (5) life-skills for better health. Pregnancy and motherhood are challenges that are made more difficult by migration. The findings point towards the need for policies and interventions: (1) to reduce the negative impact of social isolation and lack of support during pregnancy and postnatally; (2) to support greater fathers' involvement in childcare; and (3) to reconcile different practices and expectations between traditional cultures and Australian norms. They also suggest a need to test culturally competent interventions that address health and lifestyle needs in migrant women and education programs for mothers that effectively address their concerns about maternal and child health.

Abstract: During counselling mothers, nurses should focus on promoting gradual weaning practices and abstain from using traditional methods. Also, nurses should receive training and supervision on the appropriate weaning practices.
