Larval shortnose sturgeon, reared at 17°C, were subjected to delayed feeding treatments of 0, 5, 10, 15, 18, and 23 days post-yolk absorption to examine effects of food deprivation on growth, survival, swimming activity, and escape capabilities. Starvation affected growth and survival but despite degree of starvation, larvae were able to resume growth and experience high survivorship following feeding. Specific growth rate based on larval dry weight for the period directly following first feeding was highest for the day 15 and 18 delayed feeding treatments. There were no differences in survival between the 0 and 5 day treatments, however survival was reduced to 71.2%, 45.4%, and 28.8% for 10, 15, and 18 day delayed feeding treatments, respectively. Shortnose sturgeon had a point-of-no-return (PNR; 55.7% initiated feeding) at ~19 days (or 42 days post-fertilization) following the full absorption of yolk. Mean percent swimming activity and swimming speeds showed an interaction between delayed feeding treatment and larval age, such that no differences were detected at 1 and 6 days post-yolk absorption, while these swimming behaviors generally increased or spiked as feeding was delayed for 10, 15, and 18 days post-yolk absorption. At 23 days post-yolk absorption, only swimming speed increased for larvae that were denied food for 18 days. While there was an interaction between delayed feeding treatments and age for proportion of larvae exhibiting an escape response, generally, larvae from all feeding treatments exhibited a positive escape response. There were also interactions between delayed feeding treatments and age post-yolk absorption for mean and maximum escape speeds, such that less aggressive escape responses were typically detected the longer larvae were denied food. Our research suggests that larval shortnose sturgeon increase physical activity during periods of starvation to find a food patch while remaining vigilant but maybe not as capable to defend against a predatory attack as fed individuals.

This study was performed to assess the impacts of introducing diets containing different levels of soybean meal (SBM) to sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus) larvae on growth performance, body composition, and molecular responses in the juvenile stage. The sterlet larvae (57.68 ± 0.66 mg) were weaned onto the formulated diets as follows: a control diet containing 60% fishmeal (FM), and three experimental diets with replacement levels of 15% (SBM15), 30% (SBM30), and 45% (SBM45) of FM with SBM. Then, a total of 260 fish (initial weight: 323.33 ± 11.76 mg) were fed the four different diets for 28 days in triplicates (phase 1, nutritional programming, NP). All treatments were then fed with the FM diet in phase 2 (common phase), and in phase 3 (challenge phase), all experimental groups (6.14 ± 0.08 g) were transitioned to SBM45 for 28 days. At the end of phases 1 and 2, growth performance showed no significant differences among the groups (P > 0.05), while significantly improved in SBM45 than the control at the end of phase 3 (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found among the groups in any phases for whole body composition (P > 0.05). Additionally, the total saturated fatty acids were significantly higher in SBM-based diets than FM at the end of phase 3 (P < 0.05). The mRNA of GH, IGF-I was significantly affected by variation of FM replacement level (P < 0.05). The expression level of Ghrelin was up-regulated in fish fed SBM at the end of phase 3 (P < 0.05). Our findings revealed that NP can positively enhance the adaptation of juvenile sterlet sturgeon to 45% SBM when exposed to the same diets at the larval stage. Further research is being carried out to provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of digestive performance for this species.

The aim of this study was to evaluate different aspects of larviculture of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus). With this regard, the growth performance, e.g., final weight, specific growth rate (SGR), and cannibalism rate of Persian sturgeon were assessed. The study was performed using two separate strategies; size heterogeneity and feeding/fasting strategy (experiment‐A), besides implementing stocking density (experiment‐B). In the experiment‐A, twelve circular tanks (9.6 L) were considered as following: A1 (5 large starved fish +5 small starved fish); A2 (5 large fed fish +5 small fed fish); A3 (all 10 large starved fish); A4 (all 10 large fed fish); A5 (all 10 small starved fish) and A6 (all 10 small fed fish). In experiment‐B, the stocking density was doubled for all groups in the same tanks: B1 (10 large starved fish +10 small starved fish); B2 (10 large fed fish +10 small fed fish); B3 (all 20 large starved fish); B4 (all 20 large fed fish); B5 (all 20 small starved fish) and B6 (all 20 small fed fish). Data were collected at the end of the 7th and 14th days. Growth performance increased significantly in all fed treatments of experiment‐B in comparison to starved treatments (P < 0.05). The highest final weight and SGR was observed in B2 (363.5 ± 130.1 mg in 14th day) and B6 (26.5 ± 1.0% day−1 in 7th day), respectively. Cannibalism rate was increased in Persian sturgeon larvae maintained at low density, in which the highest rate was observed in the starved groups (A1 [27.5%], A3 [35.0%], A5 [40.0%]). Size heterogeneity leads to disappear/die all small larvae, in both low‐ and high‐density only in the starved group, regardless of size, died at the end of the second week. In conclusion, in Persian sturgeon, cannibalistic behavior is more affected by stocking density. To manage larviculture of this species, optimizing the stocking density to prevent the cannibalistic interaction, besides having continuous feeding is a paramount.
