Weakly Conjugated Hybrid Zinc Porphyrin Sensitizers for Solid‐State Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: Molecularly engineered weakly conjugated hybrid porphyrin systems are presented as efficient sensitizers for solid‐state dye‐sensitized solar cells. By incorporating the quinolizino acridine and triazatruxene based unit as the secondary light‐harvester as well as electron‐donating group at the meso‐position of the porphyrin core, the power conversion efficiencies of 4.5% and 5.1% are demonstrated in the solid‐state devices containing 2,2′,7,7′‐tetrakis (N,N‐di‐p‐methoxyphenylamine)‐9,9′‐spiro bifluorene as hol… Show more

“…This seminal strategy was later modified by Samoc and coworkers who employed methylmagnesium iodide to gain 7 in better yields. Up to now, this protocol is still routinely used for the preparation of compound 2 . In the 2000s, a variant of compound 2 was prepared by Ma and coworkers, namely fully diarylmethylene‐bridged triarylamine derivative 8 , and in the years to follow this compound and its derivatives were subjected to several studies regarding their photophysical properties and performance in optoelectronic devices .…”

“…In this series, bipyridyl decorated compound 54 exhibited the best performance with a PCE of 4.5%, which was ascribed to a favorable balance between efficient binding to the metal oxide surface and suppression of the self‐aggregation once immobilized onto the electrode surface. Latest research efforts were aiming at engineered hybrid porphyrin systems such as 56 as efficient sensitizers for solid state DSSCs. Again, the bridged triarylamine core was used as the secondary light harvester as well as electron‐donating group.…”

“…Thus, research into Ru free dyes, metal-complex porphyrin dyes, has intensified. 162,163 Unlike ruthenium systems, the porphyrin exhibits strong absorption in the near-IR region due to an additional Q-band in the 500-700 nm region with good stability. The asymmetric porphyrin dye (YD2-o-C8, Fig.…”

“…[1][2][3] Accordingly, scientists have studied porphyrin compounds and developed numerous model systems to understand and exploit these versatile and useful compounds. A variety of uses have been explored, such as: light harvesting antennas for artificial photosynthesis and solar energy conversion devices; [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] singlet oxygen sensitizers for photodynamic therapy; 13 wires in molecular electronics; [14][15][16][17] and triplet sensitizers for triplet-triplet annihilation based photon upconversion, [18][19][20][21] to name a few. In both the natural and man-made systems, understanding the mechanisms of energy and electron transfer reactions is crucial.…”
