Weak reactions on 12C within the continuum random phase approximation with partial occupancies

Abstract: We extend our previous studies of the neutrino-induced reactions on 12 C and muon capture to include partial occupation of nuclear subshells in the framework of the continuum random phase approximation. We find, in contrast to the work by Auerbach et al., that a partial occupation of the p 1/2 subshell reduces the inclusive cross sections only slightly. The extended model describes the muon capture rate and the 12 C(ν e , e − ) 12 N cross section very well. The recently updated flux and the improved model brin… Show more

“…The disagreement is somewhat disturbing in light of the simplicity of the reaction and in view of the fact that parameter-free calculations, such as those in [19][20][21], describe well other weak processes governed by the same weak current nuclear matrix elements. Moreover, as shown in the following subsection, the exclusive reactions populating the ground state of the final nucleus, 12 C(ν e , e) 12 N gs and 12 C(ν µ , µ) 12 N gs , and the neutral current reaction 12 C(ν e , ν e ) 12 C(15.11 MeV) have been measured [16,17] as well, and agree well with theoretical expectations.…”

“…al [13]. Some of the recent works are: [14,15] in 12 C, [16,17] in pf -shell, and [18] in neutron stars and supernovae. Typically the calculated rate of weak interactions is larger than observed; for example, a factor of ∼ 0.6 brings the calculated pf -shell GT transition rates in agreement with experiment.…”

“…The GT sum rule limit SR GT [7] and several previous RPA-like calculations, namely: RPA [12], CRPA [17], and RQRPA within S 20 for two-quasiparticle cutoff E 2qp =100 MeV [9], PQRPA within S 2 , S 3 , and S 6 [7], as well as the shell model result [12], are also exhibited.…”

“…A few of them are exhibited in the left panel of Fig. 3, namely: a) SM and RPA [12], with g A = 0.88, and S 3 , b) CRPA [17], with g A = 1.26, and S 4 , c) RQRPA [9], with g A = 1.23, S 20 , and E 2qp =100 MeV, and d) PQRPA [7], with g A = 1.0, S 2 , S 3 , and S 6 . In spite of very significant differences in g A , and the s.p.…”
