The 0+ + 41 hexadecapole transitions in 60Ni and 140Ce have experimentally been investigated by means of a-particle scattering as well as by , , + spectroscopy of the electromagnetic decay of the 4 1 states. In the case of 60Ni an upper limitof 1 x 10-7 was found for the branching of the , , , + ' E4 and E2 cascade decay of the 4 1 state by conversion electron spectroscopy. It corresponds toan enhancement factor G 4 < 9.0 s.p:u., while the a-particle scattering measurement~result in G 4 = (5.5 ± 0.8) s.p.u~.In 140Ce the 4t + 0+cross-over y-decay has been observed with an enhancement of G 4 = (11.8~0.7) s.p.u. in very good agreement with the value G 4 = (13 ± 2) s.p.u. from the a-particle scattering experiments. The eValuation of the a-particie scattering cross sections isbased on a spec~fic reaction mo~el (folding model). The , ' + + ' , . , , experimental results from the direct (4 1 + 0 ) decay are considered to be an empirical test of model dependenceof the procedures extracting L = 4 transition rates from a-particle scattering. Compiling several similar results the consistency of the method~appliedas well as the evidence and some implications of hexadecapole motion in spherical nuclei are briefly discus~ed. EXPERIMENTELLE STUDIEN DER HEXADEKAPOL-BEWEGUNG IN SPHÄRISCHEN KERNEN ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Die 0+ + 4~Hexadekapol-übergänge in 60Ni und 140Ce wurden experimentell sowohl durch a-Teilchenstreuung als auch durch Beobachtung des elektromagnetischen Zerfalls der 4~-Zustände untersucht. Im Falle von 60Ni wurde mittels Konversionselektronenspektroskopie eine obere Grenze von 1 x 10-7 für das Verzweigungsverhältnis von E4-und E2-(Kaskaden)-Zerfqll gefunden. Dies entspricht einem L=4 IIEnhancement ll G 4 < 9.0 s.p.u., während man aus den a-Teilchen-Streuexperimenten den Wert G 4 =(5.5 ± 0.8)s.p.u. gewinnt. In 140Ce konnte der 4~+ 0+ y-Obergang mit einer kollektiven Verstärkung von G4 =(11.8~0.7)s.p.u. beobachtet werden, in sehr guter übereinstimmung mit dem Wert G 4 = (13~,2) s.p.u. aus der a-Teilchenstreuung. Die Auswertung der Wirkungsquerschnitte für die a-Teilchenstreuung basiert auf einem speziellen Reaktionsmodell (Faltungsmodell). Die Resultate der direkten experimentellen Beobachtung des 4~+ 0+ Zerfalls sind ein empirischer Test auf die Modellabhängigkeit der Verfahren, mit denen L=4übergangsraten aus der a-Teilchenstreuung gewonnen werden. Zusammen mit einigen anderen ähnlichen Ergebnissen werden die Konsistenz der Methoden sowie die Evidenz und einige Implikationen der Hexadekapol-Bewegung in sphärischen Kernen kurz diskutiert.

Dramatic cost savings, safety improvements and accelerated nuclear decommissioning are all possible through the application of robotic solutions. Remotely-controlled systems with modern sensing capabilities, actuators and cutting tools have the potential for use in extremely hazardous environments, but operation in facilities used for handling radioactive material presents complex challenges for electronic components. We present a methodology and results obtained from testing in a radiation cell in which we demonstrate the operation of a robotic arm controlled using modern electronics exposed at 10 Gy/h to simulate radioactive conditions in the most hazardous nuclear waste handling facilities.
