WDM-Compatible Polarization-Diverse OAM Generator and Multiplexer in Silicon Photonics

Abstract: Spatial multiplexing using orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is an efficient means of scaling up the capacity of fiber-optic communications systems; integrated multiplexers are crucial enablers of this approach. OAM modes are circularly polarized when propagating in a fiber, however, OAM generators previously demonstrated in silicon photonics use locally linearly polarized emitters. Coupling from multiplexers to fibers in those solutions results in extra loss and complexity. Moreover, many of those solution… Show more

“…The pixel grayscale data of a 2D image is flattened into a one‐dimensional vector and loaded simultaneously on two wavelengths (1546 and 1550 nm). The beam is combined after passing through a wavelength division multiplexer [ 47 ] and modulated by the device. The device performs binary intensity modulation on the input light field, with a modulation voltage of 0 or 10 V. The modulation value of the device is determined based on the value of the target Hadamard matrix.…”

“…ntegrated OAM vortex beam emitter [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], with its advantages of small footprint, tunability and large-scale mass production, has become an important method for vortex beam generation. Lots of Integrated emitters, like microring resonator [1][2][3][4] or cobweb structure [5][6][7][8][9] have been made, which usually use emission points to send out wavelets. They interfere in space to procedure OAM vortex beam.…”

“…OAM modes are characterized by helical phase fronts that can be obtained by MRRs with periodically coupled emitters [254][255][256][257], superposed holographic fork gratings [258], and star couplers [259][260][261][262]. OAM generators based on MRRs are ultracompact and can be flexibly engineered for high-order OAM.…”

“…Most OAM generators demonstrated on silicon are in cylindrical polarization (either azimuthal or radial) [254,256,257,259,264]. Using two star couplers and 2D antennas, a circularly polarized OAM generator/multiplexer was proposed [261] and experimentally demonstrated [262]. The block diagram is illustrated in Figure 24(a).…”
