SummaryThis paper validates the feasibility of automated optimization of key wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) radio resource management parameters using control methods. The parameters are regularly adjusted in order to improve performance. The parameters examined in this study include the total cell transmission power target, the received total interference target, the downlink radio link power maximums, the handover windows and the pilot channel powers. The control was based on expert-defined rules, which applied specific trade-off policies and statistics of poor quality calls, blocking, packet queuing, power and interference levels and terminal measurements to qualify the parameter values. The approach was validated using a dynamic WCDMA system simulator with a deployment of macro and micro cells on a city region. Results on automated optimization of single parameters on cell level and results on simultaneous multi-parameter optimization on cell-cluster level are presented in this paper. The use of the automated parameter optimization methods was shown to result in a significant increase of capacity in comparison to the default parameter settings.

SUMMARYIn future wireless code division multiple access (WCDMA) cellular networks, random user mobility and time-varying multimedia traffic activity make the system design of coverage and capacity become a challenging issue. To utilise radio resource efficiently, it is crucial for cellular networks to have the capability of self-organisation for cell configuration, which can configure service coverage and system capacity dynamically to balance traffic loads among cells by being aware of the system situation. This paper proposes a reinforcement-learning-based self-organisation scheme for cell configuration in multimedia mobile networks, which takes into account both pilot power allocation and call admission control mechanisms. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves system performance significantly compared to the conventional fixed pilot power allocation scheme and the scheme in which only pilot power is adjusted dynamically but the criterion of the call admission control is not coupled to it.

In WCDMA networks, the presence of a cell is announced through a common pilot channel (CPICH). The power levels of the pilot channels have a great impact on coverage and service quality. Using mathematical optimization techniques, we address the problem of minimizing the amount of pilot power for providing service coverage and smooth handover. We present numerical results for several realistic planning scenarios of WCDMA networks, and analyze the pilot power solutions found by optimization versus those obtained by ad hoc strategies.
