Wayward Modeling: Population Genetics and Natural Selection

Abstract: Since the introduction of mathematical population genetics, its machinery has shaped our fundamental understanding of natural selection. Selection is taken to occur when differential fitnesses produce differential rates of reproductive success, where fitnesses are understood as parameters in a population genetics model. To understand selection is to understand what these parameter values measure and how differences in them lead to frequency changes. I argue that this traditional view is mistaken. The descripti… Show more

“…2 I adopt here a causal view of selection that is becoming increasingly popular among evolutionary theorists in general (e.g. Sober 1984;Shanahan 1990;Waters 2005;Glymour 2006Glymour , 2011Godfrey-Smith 2007;Otsuka 2016), as well as among authors specifically working on multilevel selection (e.g. Arnold and Fristrup 1982;Okasha 2006;Jeler 2017).…”

“…This is important to keep in mind, for there might well be good theoretical or practical reasons for a researcher to use contextual analysis, or something close to it, to model what is going on in a metapopulation. For instance, I am quite sympathetic to the view that modeling causes is the best method for predicting and explaining evolutionary dynamics (Glymour 2006). There is a case to be made that, with some changes, the contextual analysis equation in (1) can be understood as a structural equation, and hence as a representation of two of the causal factors of individual fitness.…”
