Ways of protection of pipeline systems against hydraulic hammer

Abstract: A subject of the present article is the mechanism of hydraulic hammer emergence and main principles of functioning of devices that protect pipeline against its destructive effect. Special attention is paid to reviewing of ability of undissolved air containing in fluids to reduce the power of hydraulic hammer. According to the calculation results the volume concentration of undissolved air necessary for 1068 Andrey Rogalev et al. protection of pipelines against destruction from hydraulic hammer is not higher th… Show more

“…Goran Gjetvaj and Martina Tadić [13] studied the contribution of elastic forces on pressure increase in pipelines protected by a pressure tank (air vessel). Andrey Ragalev et al [14] focused on analyzing the impact of undissolved air containing liquid in order to diminish the water hammer effect. For this purpose, they proposed injection of air into the pipe, whereby the optimal volume concentration of air does not exceed 5%.…”

“…Usually, hydraulic systems are protected against the harmful effects of pressure increases by using specialized damping devices (air tanks, compensating tanks, vents, safety and return valves, etc. [7][8][9]). In order to avoid high costs of the aforementioned protective devices, one should use (if possible) slow-closing valves, which will not lead to quick water hammers, which are the most serious in consequences.…”
