Painstaking adjustment of an optimum low-temperature cycle (LTC) condenser temperature allows cascade refrigeration system (CRS) to operate at maximum performance. This study exhibits an original approach because, for the first time, advanced exergy analysis is implemented under an optimum LTC condenser temperature of CRS operating with R41/R1233zd(E) as an environmentally-friendly refrigerant pair. Under the auspices of advanced exergy analysis, there is endogenous exergy destruction of 50.43% and exogenous exergy destruction of 49.57% within total exergy destruction. It is pointed out that the interactions between the CRS components (external irreversibilities) are partly less than exergy destruction that occurs within components (internal irreversibilities). The avoidable part within total exergy destruction, which is greater than the unavoidable part, indicates that components have a high improvement potential with a value of 56.31%. Furthermore, LTC compressor depends significantly on other components, as it has the largest exogenous part of exergy destruction with 75.82%. The results indicate that the CRS's exergy efficiency, which can be determined based on conventional exergy analysis, is only 36%. However, this increases to 68% with the improvements needed for the components.

Compression of vaporized refrigerant is the essential process of the refrigeration cycle which is performed by using a compressor. The amount of power consumed by a refrigeration system is governed by the work input given to its compressor, which also determines the COP of the system. By reducing the work input given to the compressor, the power consumption of refrigerator is reduced along with the improvement in its COP. Nowadays, nanoparticles have emerged as the new generation additives in various working fluids because of their remarkable ability to improve the heat transfer, tribological and other thermophysical properties of the base fluid. In such a vein, we propose a compressor oil based nanofluid prepared by dispersing nanoparticles into the conventional compressor oil. In the present study, four samples of nanoadditive compressor oil were prepared by dispersing the nanoparticles like Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , and ZnO into the conventional mineral oil as a lubricant. The tribological properties of this four samples were studied, out of which one sample gave a better lubrication and heat transfer properties which are considered as one of the key parameters for reducing work input to the compressor, this can result in reduced power consumption, with enhancement of COP. These results are analyzed experimentally by carrying out performance and exergy analysis in a vapor compression refrigeration system, using R600a as a refrigerant. The experimental results show that, there is an improvement of COP by 14.61% and exergy efficiency by 7.51%. Also, the efficiency defect in the major components of vapor compression refrigeration system has been reduced effectively.

Computation of Ecological Properties, Flammability Properties and Thermodynamic Properties of Sustainable Refrigerant Dimethylether (RE170) Using Martin Hou Equation of State (MHEOS)

The objective of present work is to investigate the thermodynamic properties, ecological properties and flammability properties of a refrigerant Dimethylether (RE170). Ecological properties such as ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) were reported and validated with literature. Flammability properties such as upper flammability limit (UFL), lower flammability limit (LFL) and refrigerant flammability (RF) number were reported and validated with literature. Martin-Hou equation of state (MHEOS) is used while computing the thermodynamic properties of RE170. In this investigation, a MATLAB code was developed in order to compute the properties of RE170 over the wide temperature range about 131.6 K to 398.15 K and pressure up to 51.3 bar. The computed thermodynamic properties of RE170 were validated against REFPROP database, since its thermodynamic properties were not available in the existing literature. Therefore, REFRPROP can be considered as a reliable source as that of ASHRAE. Results showed that refrigerant RE170 has zero ODP and very low GWP (equals to one). Similarly RE170 has LFL of 3.34 vol%, UFL of 25.60 vol% and RF number of 51.05 kJ/g. Results of thermodynamic properties of RE170 revealed that the mean absolute deviation (MAD) between computed liquid and vapour phase enthalpy values and REFPROP values was 1.01 % and 0.32 %, respectively. Similarly MAD between computed liquid and vapour phase entropy values and REFPROP values was 1.05 % and 0.25 %. MAD of saturation pressure was 0.071 %. MAD between computed vapour specific volume, liquid density values and REFPROP values was 1.49 % and 0.25 %. Overall, computed thermodynamic, ecological and flammability properties of RE170 shows good agreement with literature.
