Waves and null congruences in a draining bathtub

Abstract: We study wave propagation in a draining bathtub: a fluid-mechanical black hole analogue in which perturbations are governed by a Klein-Gordon equation on an effective Lorentzian geometry. Like the Kerr spacetime, the draining bathtub geometry possesses an (effective) horizon, an ergosphere and null circular orbits. We propose that a `pulse' disturbance may be used to map out the light-cone of the effective geometry. First, we apply the eikonal approximation to elucidate the link between wavefronts, null geodes… Show more

“…In the 2D setting, the Raychaudhuri equation is 'missing' the factor of 1/2 in front of ϑ 2 , and the shear tensor vanishes identically. In addition, geodesics are hypersurface orthogonal (k µ is a gradient) and so the vorticity tensor vanishes as well [30]. Hence Eq.…”

“…Moreover, wave scattering around a draining bathtub vortex has been extensively studied [66][67][68][69][70]. Under the influence of the effective acoustic metric from the draining bathtub vortex, the waves can display the analogue Aharonov-Bohm effect, superradiance effect, and orbiting oscillations in the scattering length [66,68,70].…”
