A solar eclipse is a rare astronomical event that occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned in a straight line with the moon in between the sun and earth occulting the Sun as well as its radiation by casting a shadow on different parts of the earth. Solar eclipse observation gives a unique opportunity to study the impact of solar radiation on the atmosphere-ionosphere coupled system. The effect of solar eclipses is noticed as a sudden decrease of ionospheric density due to the cutoff of solar ionizing radiation (Mitra et al., 1933). A combination of ground and space-based observations will give an idea about the ionospheric response to the topside and bottom side ionosphere during a solar eclipse. Past studies of the ionospheric response to solar eclipse showed the generation of atmospheric gravity waves in the earth's atmosphere during the eclipse period because of the passage of the Moon's shadow at a supersonic speed (Chimonas & Hines, 1970). Various experimental and modeling techniques have been performed to study the ionospheric response to solar eclipses in the past (Chernogor & Mylovanov, 2020). A Solar eclipse is known to produce changes in the earth's atmosphere and ionosphere. The most common changes are the decrease in electron density, decrease in ion and electron temperature, compositional changes in the ionosphere, plasma movement, and decrease in lower atmospheric temperature. Past solar eclipse studies showed the generation of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) and gravity waves during solar eclipse using observations. [1] Studies on the solar eclipse-induced changes in near-surface ozone and its precursors NO x and CO were carried out at two nearby tropical coastal locations, Thumba (very close to the sea) and the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), which is 4.5 km off the Thumba coast and with varying topography, during the annular eclipse of 15 January 2010. The surface ozone decreased by 12 and 13 ppb (35% and 52%) over Thumba and CESS, with the time lag of 40 min and 25 min from the maximum phase of eclipse, respectively, and at CESS, post-eclipse recovery was faster compared to Thumba. No pronounced change was observed in NO x , but CO showed an enhancement toward the ending phase of the eclipse. The diurnal patterns of ozone and their differences at the two sites were strongly dependent on local meteorology, in particular, the mesoscale dynamics and topography. While the temperature decreased by 1.2°C at Thumba, the decrease was almost double ($2.1°C) at CESS. The early fall in temperature caused the early setting in of land-breeze (post-eclipse effect), which in turn triggered an early evening decrease in near-surface ozone compared to the control conditions. The present study points to the role of mesoscale meteorology/dynamics in controlling the evolution of solar eclipse-induced changes in ozone in a relatively clean environment. The chemical box model simulations reproduced these broad features: a percentage decrease and the time lag in surface ozone. The observation of total column ozone showed a decrease and fluctuations, after the eclipse maximum.

Previous attempts to detect Eclipse-induced acoustic gravity waves (AGWs) have met with varying degrees of success. In this study the speed and direction of the waves have been determined at two widely spaced locations by an HF Doppler technique. The AGW activity following the eclipse was different to the background waves detected before the event in amplitude, speed and direction. The velocity vectors are consistent with a generating mechanism for the waves based on the supersonic passage of the cooled region of the atmosphere during the eclipse.
