Wavelet denoising of vaginal pulse amplitude

Abstract: Vaginal pulse amplitude (VPA) has been the most commonly analyzed signal of the vaginal photoplethysmograph. Frequent, large, and variable-morphology artifacts typically have crowded this signal. These artifacts usually were corrected by hand, which may have introduced large differences in outcomes across laboratories. VPA signals were collected from 22 women who viewed a neutral film and a sexual film. An automated, wavelet-based, denoising algorithm was compared against the uncorrected signal and the signal … Show more

“…The amplitude of each peak was measured and peak amplitude was averaged within 15 s time bins to be consistent with the sampling restrictions of the Rigiscan (see above). The first author visually deleted signal artifacts, a technique demonstrated to yield comparable outcomes to a standardized, wavelet-based artifact reduction technique (Prause, Williams, & Bosworth, 2010).…”

“…These excerpts showed a consensual, erotic, heterosexual encounter, edited to equal parts kissing/foreplay, oral sex being performed on the man and then the woman, and penile–vaginal intercourse. To establish a baseline, a documentary about underwater creatures [22] was shown for 15 minutes before the start of the sexual video [26].…”

“…This approach would be problematic because of the impact of artifacts. Artifacts are not restricted to a particular frequency band [26]. Levin and Wylie have suggested a different quantification method based on the supposition that vasomotion drives apparent changes in vasodilation [27].…”
