Wavelet-based lossless compression scheme with progressive transmission capability

Abstract: Lossless image compression with progressive transmission capabilities plays a key role in measurement applications, requiring quantitative analysis and involving large sets of images. This work proposes a wavelet-based compression scheme that is able to operate in the lossless mode. The quantization module implements a new technique for the coding of the wavelet coefficients that is more effective than the classical zerotree coding. The experimental results obtained on a set of multimodal medical images show t… Show more

“…2) Intraband Wavelet Coding Algorithm: Essentially, the reference grid coding algorithm is a 3-D extension of the wavelet-based quadtree-coding algorithm called square partitioning (SQP) introduced in [27]. There are some differences though between the proposed algorithm and its 2-D predecessor, as explained in the following.…”

“…Moreover, the tiles within any given subband are coded independently of each other. Last, but not least, similar to other intraband wavelet coders [27]- [31] the employed reference grid coding algorithm supports quality scalability for any decoded resolution. For more details related to this algorithm, the reader is referred to [21].…”

“…In this context, wavelets play a major role, being used to generate multiresolution representations of an input signal and to build scalable codecs based on them. Wavelet-based scalable codecs include well-known examples for images (Said and Pearlman, 1996;Munteanu et al, 1999;Taubman and Marcellin, 2001), for video (Taubman and Zakhor, 1994;Ohm, 1994;Andreopoulos et al, 2004), and were introduced for surfaces by Lounsbery et al (Lounsbery et al, 1997). Essentially, Lounsbery et al established the link between subdivision schemes and multiresolution analysis for meshes.…”
