Wavelet-based Characterization of Seismicity and Geomagnetic Disturbances in the South Sandwich Microplate Area

Abstract: This paper analyzes geomagnetic disturbances associated with seismic events in the northern transcurrent margin of the South Sandwich microplate and South American plate, with their epicenter at distances within 350 km from King Edward Point geomagnetic observatory on the archipelago of the Georgias del Sur islands. Geomagnetic field records measured over a one-year period in three observatories of the INTERMAGNET network near the area under study are examined. Anomalous variations in geomagnetic records… Show more

“…In order to highlight local magnetic variations and isolate them from solar activity, the observatories' paired data were selected, considering the earthquake proximity to the observatory network according to Larocca et al (2021) [20] . Therefore, the differences calculated, referred to as deltas (ΔH) minimized the solar diurnal variation effects.…”

“…Arecco et al (2023) [11] recorded abnormal sea height levels along the Argentine coast and Antarctic bases during the Mw 8.1 earthquake of August 12, 2021 in the Sandwich Islands, recording heights above 1.3 m in the South Georgia Islands.

“…The study area is located on the Scotia Plate boundaries at the transcurrent and subduction margins of the South Sandwich microplate and the South American plate, and the non-accretionary convergent continental margin between the Scotia and Antarctic plates. There are numerous studies that report relationships between earthquakes and some physical phenomenon such as phenomena that mainly include disturbances such as electromagnetic anomalies associated with earthquakes or the link with ionospheric disturbances and electrophysical properties of the medium, among others [1].…”
