Wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber laser based on an all-fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer filter

Abstract: Wavelength-tunable dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons have been obtained by inserting all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) filters with different free spectral ranges (FSRs) in a Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The MZI filter is fabricated by splicing one segment of seven-core fiber (SCF) between two segments of single-mode fibers. The bandwidth of the filter depends on the FSR of the modulated interference curve and consequently depends on the tapered fiber diameter. Inserting MZI filter… Show more

“…The key parameters of the reviewed lasers are given in Table 1. The mechanisms used for creation of wavelength-dependent losses include polarisation effects (birefringent spectral filters [86] introducing minimal losses for radiation that does not change polarisation when passing through the filter; polarisation controller(s) [45,69,73,81] or intra-cavity waveplates [83], whose function is essentially similar to that of a birefringent filter; intensity-dependent variation of birefringence in the cavity [84,85]; Sagnac loop mirror [87] with spectrally controlled reflection), interference effects (various interferometers: Fabry-Pérot [88], Mach-Zehnder [89], and so on), dispersion effects (prisms [90], diffraction gratings [64,68,76,82], acousto-optical filters [49,77]). The majority of the wavelength tuning mechanisms used in pulsed fibre lasers are known; they were earlier applied to other types of lasers.…”

“…When a filter with a 3 dB bandwidth of 12.00 nm was selected, stable dissipative solitons were obtained. And when a filter with a 3 dB bandwidth of 6.64 nm was used, the fiber laser generated amplifier similaritons [41]. By applying tension to the tapered region, the central wavelengths of both dissipative solitons and self-similar pulses could be tuned.…”

“…The longer cavity length of the ring cavity allows for the flexible insertion of tuning and filtering components, which expands the tuning range and results in a narrower laser linewidth. Currently, prominent wavelength-selective devices include Fabry-Perot filters [7] , fiber Sagnac ring filters [8] , fiber Lyot filters [9] , Mach-Zehnder interferometer filters [10][11] , and multi-fiber ring-structure filters [12][13] , among others. This paper investigates the filtering characteristics of fiber ring filters.…”
