Wavefront aberration changes caused by a gradient of increasing accommodation stimuli

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the wavefront aberration changes in human eyes caused by a gradient of increasing accommodation stimuli. Design This is a prospective, single-site study. Methods Healthy volunteers (n ¼ 22) aged 18-28 years whose refraction states were emmetropia or mild myopia, with astigmatism o1 diopter (D), were included in this study. After dilating the right pupil with 0.5% phenylephrine drops, the wavefront aberration of the right eye was measured continuously either with… Show more

“…For a fixed pupil diameter, HOA RMS consistently increases with greater accommodation demands, although some have found this occurs only with demands above 3 D . The major consistent change in HOAs that occurs during accommodation is a decrease in primary spherical aberration (Z40), becoming less positive or more negative .…”

“…For a fixed pupil diameter, HOA RMS consistently increases with greater accommodation demands, 124,125 although some have found this occurs only with demands above 3 D. [126][127][128][129] The major consistent change in HOAs that occurs during accommodation is a decrease in primary spherical aberration (Z 0 4 ), becoming less positive or more negative. [124][125][126][129][130][131][132] Secondary spherical aberration (Z 0 6 ) also undergoes a relatively small change, 124,132 but is less consistent with respect to the direction of change.…”

“…According to Gabriel et al and Zhou et al, aberrations of higher order change with an increase in the accommodation strain [10,11]. During accommodation, a decrease in coma-like aberrations -Z (3) (−1), Z (3) (1) -was found; spherical aberration -Z (4) (0) -changes the sign from positive to negative [12].…”

“…Выявлена взаимосвязь аберраций и аккомодации: по ряду данных, более высокий уровень суммарных аберраций, изменение структуры волнового фронта могут снижать аккомодационный ответ и, напротив, в процессе аккомодации существенно изменяются параметры аберраций [9][10][11][12][13].…”
