Wave Impact Forces on Offshore Structures: Re-Examination and New Interpretations

Abstract: A new mathematical model is presented for determining the time histories of impact forces on horizontal circular members and flat deck structures of offshore platforms. Comparison with characteristics of measured data allows explanation of various anomalies, as well as further insight into the effects of measurement system dynamics. Extensions of the analysis are described for application to problems of impact on vertical cylinders, as well as overhanging decks or jacket structure legs during platform transpor… Show more

“…Among the known theoretical approaches, the momentum method developed by Kaplan (1992, Kaplan et al, 1995, has been used extensively to estimate the wave impact and slamming loads on fixed offshore platforms. For instance, the method has been applied for the analysis of wave impact on decks of Gravity Based Structures (GBS) (Baarholm and Stansberg, 2005) as well as other fixed offshore 4 platforms (Baarholm, 2009, Baarholm andFaltinsen, 2004).…”

“…While previous research on forces associated with flat plates (Shih & Anastasiou, 1992), circular members (Kaplan, 1992), and offshore platforms (Bea et al, 1999) has developed analysis methods, these may not be well suited for bridges. Highway bridge superstructures pose a unique challenge due to their complex geometries, bluff profile, and their relatively large width-to-wavelength ratio.…”

“…These equations are parameterizations of a physics-based model (PBM) derived from Kaplan's equations of wave forces on platform deck structures, originally developed for offshore oil platforms (Kaplan, 1992;Kaplan et al, 1995). The PBM was developed at the University of Florida and was verified through a series of 2-D experiments conducted on a 1:8 scale model of a section of the I-10 Bridge over Escambia Bay, FL.…”
