Wave groupiness and spectral bandwidth as relevant parameters for the performance assessment of wave energy converters

Abstract: To date the estimation of long-term wave energy production at a given deployment site has commonly been limited to a consideration of the significant wave height H s and mean energy period T e . This paper addresses the sensitivity of power production from wave energy converters to the wave groupiness and spectral bandwidth of sea states. Linear and non-linear systems are implemented to simulate the response of converters equipped with realistic power take-off devices in real sea states. It is shown in particu… Show more

“…There are many other inconsistencies occurring with the use of scatter diagrams, such as the dependency of the matrix on location and wave directionality. The IEC standards committee is a very important initiative that endeavours to standardise the parameters used for wave energy calculation [18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Books were overtopping Low head turbine published by Falnes (2002) and Cruz (2008). In addition to devicespecific R&D, scientific research has been carried out on assessment of wave energy resource (Kerbiriou et al, 2007;Folley and Whittaker, 2009;Saulnier et al, 2011), on device control for maximising power capture (Hals et al, 2002;Babarit and Clément, 2006;Crétel et al, 2011;Clément and Babarit, 2012;Fusco and Ringwood, 2012), on device performance and on array interactions (Folley et al, 2012;Babarit, 2013).…”

“…As a consequence, the met-ocean data was pre-processed to ensure consistency in frequency resolution and measurement units. This process was important because some wave parameters, such as spectral band-width, are known to be sensitive to the frequency resolution [15,16]. After processing, the frequency discretization ranges from 0.004 to 0.4775 Hz at constant 0.004 Hz bin-width.…”
