ODP Hole 740A is located on the inner part of the East Antarctic continental shelf in Prydz Bay, at the seaward end of a major onshore rift structure known as the Lambert Graben. Drilling at this site led to the recovery of some 65 m of continental sediments (Prydz Bay red beds) that form part of a much thicker (2-3 km) pre-continental breakup sequence, the development of which may be related to the initiation and rifting of the Lambert Graben. Palynological and paleomagnetic studies have not been able to determine the age of the sediments; they may be equivalent to the onshore late Permian Amery Group or younger. The succession consists predominantly of sandstone, siltstone, and claystone arranged in erosively based, pedogenically influenced fining-upward sequences up to 5 m thick. These were deposited by shallow, braided streams draining an extensively vegetated alluvial plain, with sufficient topographic relief to trap finegrained sediment and inhibit rapid channel shifting. Pedogenic processes were initiated on the alluvial plain, but climatic conditions were generally unsuitable for extensive pedogenic carbonate formation and the development of mature soil profiles. The sediments were probably derived from a rapidly uplifted fault block terrain composed of upper Proterozoic and Archaean gneisses lying to the southeast of the depositional site. Uplift may have taken place along the tectonically active seaward extension of the eastern faulted margin of the Lambert Graben, which passes immediately southeast of Hole 740A. Differences in mineralogical composition between the Amery Group and the Prydz Bay red beds probably reflect differences in rock composition in the source area. The age of the Prydz Bay red beds has still to be resolved.

A strong influence of microbial mats on the physics of Neoproterozoic sedimentation is explored within a 60 m-thick stratigraphic interval within the Sonia Sandstone, Jodhpur Group, western India. This marine interval is bounded by two terrestrial units, its base being marked by a transgressive lag and the top by an unconformity. Progradation from upper neritic, above fair-weather wave base to supralittoral settings was later terminated by a transgression; deposits of lower shoreface-upper shoreface transition thus overlie supralittoral aeolian sandstones, the basal contact of the former deposits being marked by another transgressive lag.A wide spectrum and abundant examples of microbial mat or mat-derived structures supports unusual cohesiveness within granular sand deposited in a high-energy marine environment. The cohesiveness is manifested in abundant preservation of several delicate primary structures and also in their replication in overlying beds, even after they were subjected to high-energy currents.A low rate of sedimentation and severely restricted sediment reworking resulted from prolific mat growth, and consequent depletion in the sediment budget was manifested in openUP (April 2008) bedform migration and evolution. These factors could also have influenced the sequencebuilding pattern in a distinctive way, as is already reported from several Meso-and Neoproterozoic successions. Ubiquitous mat growth thus had the potential to impart significant distinctions to Proterozoic clastic sedimentary successions.

Revista Brasileira de Geociências 42(4): 646-662, dezembro de 2012 646Arquivo digital disponível on-line no site www.sbgeo.org.br ResumoA Formação Rio Maria compreende uma sucessão sedimentar progradante depositada em mar epicontinental desenvolvido ao longo da borda leste da Província Carajás -a mais antiga província do Cráton Amazônico -tendo sido intrudida por granitos em torno de 1.88 Ga. Quatro associações de fácies foram reconhecidas: prodelta-barras distais, frente deltaica-shoreface, planície deltaica-distributários e canais fluviais. Estratificações cruzadas hummocky e swaley de grande porte (> 1 m) atestam influência de ondas de tempestade nos depósitos de shoreface (tempestitos) e estratificações bipolares com recobrimento argiloso indicam atuação de processos de maré. As composições modais dos componentes detríticos do quartzarenito, sublitarenito e arcóseo indicam fontes de blocos continentais (Cráton interior, segundo a classificação de Dickinson). Os minerais pesados (por exemplo, zircão, turmalina, estaurolita, epidoto, etc.) sugerem contribuições de rochas plutônicas félsicas e metamórfica. Grãos de zircão muito bem arredondados podem ser relacionados a sedimentos reciclados ou intensamente retrabalhados, ou fontes metamórficas. Esses litotipos podem ser atribuídos às rochas que constituem o Bloco Rio Maria, que inclui granitos e rochas metamórficas do terreno granitogreenstone de Rio Maria (3.0 -2.86 Ga).Palavras-chave: depósitos de maré; estratificação cruzada hummocky; Formação Rio Maria; Cráton Amazônico. Abstract Fluvial-deltaic depositional environment influenced by tide and storm of The Rio Maria Formation, east of Carajás Province, AmazonianCraton. The Rio Maria Formation is a siliciclastic sedimentary sequence deposited in an eiperic sea formed along of eastern edge of the Carajás Province -the oldest Archean province of the Amazonian Cratonbeing intruded by rapakivi-type granite (1.88 Ga). Four facies associations have been recognized: prodelta-distal bar, delta-front/shoreface, delta-plain/distributaries and fluvial channels. Large-scale hummocky-swaley cross-stratifications (> 1 m) attest storm waves-influenced in upper shoreface deposits (tempestites). Bipolar cross-beddings with drape and reactivation surfaces reflect tidal-influence. Quartzarenite, sublitharenite and subarkose modal frameworks indicate stable continental block (craton interior) source. Heavy-minerals assemblages (e.g. zircon, tourmaline, staurolite, epidote, etc.) provide evidence of contribution from felsic plutonic igneous and metamorphic rocks. Well-rounded zircon grains can be associated to reworked sediments or metamorphic sources. These litotypes can be related to Rio Maria Block, which includes granitoid and metassedimentary rocks of the Rio Maria granite-greenstone terrain (3.0 -2,86 Ga).
