Watermelon [Citrullus lanatus var lanatus L.] is a major xerophytic crop originating in Africa especially grown in subtropical and tropical parts of the world. However, few adapted varieties are available to promote greater yield and make watermelon a viable commercial crop of choice. Path analysis and combining ability was carried out for yield related traits among three popular local landraces; Landrace1, Landrace 2 and Landrace 3 collected in Zimbabwe and three commercial watermelon varieties ‘Congo’, ‘Charleston Grey’ and ‘Crimson Sweet’ in plots arranged in an RCBD replicated 3 times. A complete diallel mating design was used to generate 36 F1 genotypes which together with the parents were evaluated for several quantitate traits. Data on correlations, path analysis, GCA and SCA between fruit yield and other traits were computed using Microsoft Excel and GenStat 17. Individual fruit weight (FIW) and the number of fruits per plant (NF) were found to be significantly linked with final fruit yield. Significant positive correlations were also observed on NF and number of female flowers (NFF), number of vines (NV), and FIW and these traits could be recommended as reliable selection indicators for creating high yielding watermelon genotypes. Path analysis showed that FIW and NF were the most important contributors to watermelon yield. GCA and SCA effects were significant and positive for yield which indicates that the traits are controlled by both additive and non-additive genes. ‘Crimson Sweet’ and ‘Landrace 1’ were the best pollen sources whereas ‘Landrace 1’ and ‘Landrace 2’ were the highest yielders when used as female parents. Overall, results from this study identified usable yield related proxies and need to incorporate local landraces germplasm in watermelon improvement.

Watermelon is a very important commodity in food security, especially horticultural products. Watermelon hybrid varieties are proven to be able to increase production and income for watermelon farmers. Watermelon breeding continues to produce superior varieties. Pure strains of watermelon as parents in the propagation or production of hybrid watermelon seeds, are necessary for crosses between parents to produce F1 hybrids. Evaluation and selectionare important stages in a plant breeding program. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on theproduction of hybrid watermelons from the research team of the Politeknik Negeri Lampung watermelon breeder.This study used a Randomized Block Design with nine treatments (varieties) repeated three times. The results of the observations were analyzed using the LSD test at the 5% level. The results showed that the varieties WM200701 and WM200702 had dark skin color and red flesh. Sweetness level data were significantly different by 9.3 °brix andl0.15 °brix when compared to control (8.9 °brix). Varieties WM 200703 and WM 200706 have bright green skin color with thin stripes with red and yellow flesh color. WM 200704 and WM 200705 have red flesh and dark green skin with thick striations. WM 200703 has the highest fruit weight of 4.63 kg per fruit. The six hybrid varieties tested have the potential to be submitted for registration of the F1 hybrid watermelon variety.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) is one of the horticultural crops members of Cucurbitaceae family, which is known to have high economic value and public interest. Since the entry into Indonesia, the application of watermelon plant breeding has grown to produce new superior varieties, hence not only able to meet market demand, but also to have implications for the progress of the agribusiness sector and national food security. Watermelon ♀ 'Maduri' with ♂ 'Putri Delima' cultivar hybrid produce an oblong-shaped fruit, has a dark green skin tone with dark green streaks, orange flesh fruit, and sweet taste. However, to be certified and become a cultivar that can be cultivated extensively, the new varieties need to have an adaptive and stable character. This study aims to determine the phenotype character and stability of watermelon ♀ 'Maduri' with ♂ 'Putri Delima' cultivar hybrid which is cultivated in Jamusan Village, Prambanan Sub-district, Sleman, D.I.Yogyakarta fields. Furthermore, 1 randomly collected watermelon samples were taken. Then, the qualitative and quantitative characters of samples were observed. The quantitative data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2016 with ANOVA single factor test at 1% and 5% level. The result of ANOVA test at 5% significance level shows F value at 0,00055 and Fcrit value at 4,259677273, while at the l% significance level, F value obtained at 0,00055 and the Fcrit value obtained at 7,822871. F value is smaller than Fcrit value at 5% and 1% significance level so there is no significance difference. Thus, the phenotype character of F2 watermelon is deemed stable.
