Nowadays, there is a significant trend away from solvent-based polyurethane systems towards waterborne polyurethane dispersions due to government regulations requiring manufacturers to lower total volatile organic compounds, as well as consumer preference for more environmentally friendly products. In this work, a renewable vegetable oil-based polyol derived from jatropha oil was polymerized with isophorone diisocyanate and dimethylol propionic acid to produce anionic waterborne polyurethane dispersion. Free standing films with up to 62 wt.% bio-based content were successfully produced after evaporation of water from the jatropha oil-based waterborne polyurethane (JPU) dispersion, which indicated good film formation. The chemical and thermo-mechanical properties of the JPU films were characterized. By increasing the OH numbers of polyol from 161 mgKOH/g to 217 mgKOH/g, the crosslinking density of the JPU was significantly increased, which lead to a better storage modulus and improved hydrophobicity. Overall, JPU produced from polyol having OH number of 217 mgKOH/g appears to be a promising product for application as a binder for wood and decorative coatings.

Sustainable aqueous polyurethane (PU) dispersions derived from castor oil and lignosulfonate (LS) have been successfully synthesized with stable nanoscale morphology and average particle sizes as small as 35 nm with no organic solvent. Incorporation of a rigid structure of LS into the castor oil-based PU reinforces the resulting cast films of the PU−LS nanocomposites and increases the cross-link density, as determined by dynamic mechanical analysis measurements and the theory of rubber elasticity. In addition, the LS plays a significant role in enhancing the ultimate mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting nanocomposite films. The TEM morphologies of the PU−LS dispersions confirmed that the average particle sizes are constant (approximately 35 nm) for all different LS concentrations. The effect of LS on the dynamic viscosity of PU−LS aqueous dispersions at different angular frequencies in the linear viscoelastic regime has also been investigated, and the experimental data were analyzed based on the Cross model. The dynamic viscosity increases significantly with increasing LS content while holding a constant 15 wt % of the solid content in all dispersions. The nature of LS as a water-soluble material suggests that PU−LS nanoparticles adsorb more water onto the particle surface with increasing LS content, which leads to a considerable decrease in the concentration of free water in the dispersion, and consequently, the viscosity increases dramatically. The influence of different concentrations of LS on the reduced viscosity of the dispersions was investigated using the Krieger−Dougherty viscosity model with a critical concentration of LS (ϕ c = 0.08) above which the viscosity of the dispersions increased strongly. The current study provides an effective and promising approach to synthesize high-performance, biorenewable nanocomposites for coatings and adhesives.

Nowadays, waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) prepared from renewable resources has attracted more and more attention. However, due to its structure, the prepared films easily swells in water and greatly affects the application range of WPUs. Therefore, solving the problem of water resistance is a way to improve the application range of WPUs. In this study, a series of WPU dispersions were prepared using castor oil as the bio-based polyol. Besides, the thiol-ene photo click reaction was carried out on the WPU films for silane modification. The effect of the silane modification on the chemical structures of the WPU dispersions and the properties of the WPU films was investigated and discussed. The results revealed that the WPU dispersions had a smaller particle size and potential, showing excellent stability. In addition, the modified WPU films showed highly water resistance which 72 h water absorption could be reduced to 1.94% and the contact angle was up to 99.34 . Moreover, the modified WPU films also exhibited excellent solvent resistance (in acid and salt solution) and thermal stability. This study can provide a new way to improve the water-resistance, hydrophobicity, and thermal stability of bio-based waterborne polyurethane for potential application in painting, adhesives and inks.
