Water-to-Air Transfer of Nano/Microsized Particulates: Enrichment Effect in Bubble Bursting Jet Drops

Abstract: Bubbles dispersed in liquids are widely present in many natural and industrial processes and play a key role in mediating mass transfer during their lifetime from formation to rising to bursting. In particular, nano/microsized particulates and organisms present in the bulk water can be highly enriched in the jet drops ejected during bubble bursting, impacting global climate and public health. However, the detailed mechanism of this enrichment remains obscure with the enrichment factor being difficult to predic… Show more

“…Additionally, an approximately linear relationship was observed between the water and air concentrations of PS MNP on a logarithmic scale. At higher concentrations in water, the observed linearity may wear off due to the scavenging of MNP by rising bubbles reaching saturation 45 along with potential homo-and heteroaggregation of MNP in natural waters. 29,46 However, no such aggregation was observed in the PS samples.…”

“…26 Masry et al 26 used pristine PE microspheres with a similar size range (0.2−9.9 μm) in their bubble bursting experiments and also observed no significant transfer. Additionally, unlike PS MNP that can be scavenged by the bubbles during their rise through the bulk water, 45,48,49 floating PE MNP have to be present in the bubble cap during surface bubble bursting for aerosolization to occur. 26…”

“…During the ascent of bubbles, the target molecules are intercepted and adsorbed on the bubble surface due to the lower surface energy, resulting in aerosols rich in target molecules when they reach the liquid–gas interface . Rupture jetting is a universal process that occurs when bubbles reach the liquid surface and collapse, causing a jetting droplet due to the cavity collapse-induced upward liquid jet . Through the tuning of bubbling parameters, the absorption efficiency of the substrate collecting the target chemical is escalated.…”

“…This process is associated with aerosol production [10,[22][23][24][25], including bacteria [26,27] and organic compounds [28]. Besides these, bursting can also lead to the ejection of microplastic particles into the air [29][30][31][32][33] similar to microplastic ejection by impacting raindrops [34].…”
