Composting of agricultural wastes not only can reduce environmental pollution caused by improper disposal, but recycling of agricultural wastes transforms them into highly valuable products, such as fertilizers or soil conditioners, for agricultural applications. However, the composting process and final product are easily affected by the limited oxygen supply that results from insufficient aeration, especially in the center of a large-scale windrow. Hence, a pilot-scale experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the turning frequency on the composting efficiency and compost quality of used pig manure and fungus residue, so as to capture an operational technique suitable for the effective co-composting pig manure and edible fungi residue for a large-scale composting plant.

Food waste (FW) has always been a significant issue faced by almost all countries worldwide. The rise in FW does not only influence one’s food supply, yet the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas leads to global warming and health issues. This paper reviews the primary FW treatments available in all countries. Most advanced countries have accomplished that the least cost and most efficient FW treatment is composting. Among all the composting methods available, vermicomposting (VC) that uses redworms (Eisenia fetida) produces nutrients rich bio-compost, as proven in the existing literature. Furthermore, bio-compost produced by the VC method nourishes plant growth. In this study, the primary research data sources are 78 scientific articles over the last few years. This research is the consensus on VC as the FW treatment. Besides, briefly discuss the FW pretreatment methods, the effect of bio-compost on soil properties, and their corresponding effects on the growth of Abelmoschus esculentus L.

Mechanical dewatering wastewater (MDW) from municipal garbage is a mixture that is quickly separated from raw domestic waste by high-pressure extrusion without a sump fermentation process. Alkali treatment-coagulation sedimentation-ASBR treatment technology was adopted in this study to treat SS and organic matter. The results showed that the optimum pH of the alkali treatment was 9.0, polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was the best coagulant for the coagulation and sedimentation of MDW. The optimal working condition were gotten with a Ca(OH)2 dosage of 200 mg/L, a pH of 10.0, and a PAC dosage of 800 mg/L, under the intermittent stirring mode of 250 r/min for 1 min and then 50 r/min for 10 min. Perfect domestication effect of the ASBR was achieved under medium temperature for 28 days. The optimum conditions for ASBR were determined as follows: temperature was 35 °C, and organic loading rate (OLR) was 6 kg COD/ (L·d). Analysis of the microbial community structure succession showed that the success rate of anaerobic microorganisms in medium temperature ASBR was fast and adaptable. This study provides technical support for the actual application.
