A study has been conducted on the leaching of two fungicides, tebuconazole and cymoxanil, in a soil amended with spent mushroom substrate (SMS), with an evaluation of how different factors influence this process. The objective was based on the potential use of SMS as a biosorbent for immobilizing pesticides in vulnerable soils, and the need to know how it could affect the subsequent transport of these retained compounds. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) for C-fungicides, non-incubated and incubated over 30days, were obtained in columns packed with an unamended soil (S), and this soil amended with SMS at rates of 5% (S+SMS5) and 50% (S+SMS50) under saturated and saturated-unsaturated flows. The highest leaching of tebuconazole (>50% of the total C added) was found in S when a saturated water flow was applied to the column, but the percentage of leached fungicide decreased when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied in both SMS-amended soils. Also a significant decrease in leaching was observed for tebuconazole after incubation in the column, especially in S+SMS50 when both flows were applied. Furthermore, cymoxanil leaching was complete in S and S+SMS when a saturated flow was applied, and maximum peak concentrations were reached at 1pore volume (PV), although BTCs showed peaks with lower concentrations in S+SMS. The amounts of cymoxanil retained only increased in S+SMS when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied. A more relevant effect of SMS for reducing the leaching of fungicide was observed when cymoxanil was previously incubated in the column, although mineralization was enhanced in this case. These results are of interest for extending SMS application on the control of the leaching of fungicides with different physicochemical characteristics after different ageing times in the soil and water flow conditions applied.

Water-induced erosion of iron tailings is a serious problem affecting ecological restoration, but, little is known about how the occurrence of erosion on tailings slopes and types of reclaimed substrates that are beneficial to reducing slope erosion. This study measured the slope erosion characteristics of six reclaimed substrates including loose tailings (Lt), crusty tailings (ct), tailings incorporating mushroom residues (tM), tailings incorporating soil (tS), tailings incorporating soil and mushroom residues (TSM) and soil (S) in experimental soil flumes under three simulated intermittent rainfall events, with intensity of 60, 90 and 120 mm h −1 for the first, second and third event, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in erosion characteristics among the six reclaimed substrates. TM had the lowest sediment yield but the highest runoff volume without obvious rills. LT, CT and TS had the highest sediment yield rates and severe slope erosion morphology. With the increased number of rainfall events, the runoff rates of the six substrates all increased, but only the sediment yield rates of LT, CT and TS increased, the sediment yield rates of other substrates increased first and then decreased. therefore, adding agricultural organic wastes such as mushroom residues to tailings and reducing soil addition may be an effective way to reduce erosion and promote ecological restoration in soilless tailings areas. Mining is essential for maintaining society's current life style and economic development. However, mining also impacts the environment 1-3. One of the most significant environmental impacts from mining is soil erosion, which has received increasing attention 3-8. Waste dumps generated from mining usually consist of unconsolidated waste rock, parent material, tailings or their mixtures 9,10. The waste dumps are piled on the land surface in the form of overburden dump. They usually become the material source for debris flow, river sediment, and hyper-concentrated sediment flow of artificially accelerated erosion 11,12 as well as the source of wind erosion 13,14. The erosion forms and characteristics of mining waste dumps are different from those occuring naturally 5. Accumulated overburden dump material is prone to gravity erosion 12 , causing abrupt increases or decreases in sediment yield 15. Erosion in coal waste slag has shown extreme sediment fluctuation at the beginning of runoff, accompanied by local debris flow 16. Martín Duque et al. 1 observed that tailing deposits underwent severe erosion after long-term abandonment, and as a result, caused a mosaic-like erosion and sedimentary landforms with gully formations upon and piping within deposits. Therefore, at a larger scale, it is important to reconstruct stable post-mining landforms and control erosion, which have been claimed in mine reclamation regulations in different countries 17,18. Physical degradation of the subsurface layer of soils reduces the effectiveness of no-till (NT) as a sustainable soil management approach in crop production. Chemical factors may reduce the structural stability of Oxisols and thereby exacerbate compaction from machinery traffic. We studied the relationship between chemical management and structural degradation in Oxisols cultivated under NT at three sites in southern Brazil. The surface and subsurface layers of the soils were characterised chemically and mineralogically and three physical attributes related to soil structural stability (readily dispersible clay in water, mechanically dispersible clay in water, and water percolation) were quantified for each layer. The same characterisations were performed on Oxisols collected from adjacent non-cultivated areas, to provide reference data for non-degraded soil. The levels of dispersed clay in the cultivated soil from the surface layer matched those of the non-cultivated soil, but for the subsurface layer higher dispersed clay levels in the cultivated soil showed that it was physically degraded relative to the non-cultivated soil. Water percolation was found to be slower through the Oxisols cultivated under NT, irrespective of the soil layer. The relationships between the three indicators of soil structural stability and the measured chemical and mineralogical variables of the soils were explored through an analysis of canonical correlation. The principal variables associated with the lower stability of the cultivated vs non-cultivated Oxisols were the lower concentrations of organic carbon and exchangeable aluminium and, for the surface layer, the higher pH. It is argued that structural degradation of Oxisols cultivated under NT, observed predominantly in the subsurface layer, has been aggravated by the accumulation of amendments and fertilisers in the surface soil and reduced levels of organic matter, especially in the subsurface layer.
